ATF will shift much better than gear oil and was the factory fill in most A833 applications. Gear oil was put in them because people complained about gear rattle in neutral.

Another choice is to use Roayl Purple, Redline or Penzoil manual transmission fluid. I have had the Penzoil Syncromesh Fluid in my A833 for about 20k miles now. It works even better than the ATF and provides better lubrication than ATF.
