Great point, but is the OP just trying to upgrade an already healthy longblock or a total rebuild?
The factory 340 replacement cam, a Edelbrock performer or LD4B, small 4 barrer (500-625), cheap headers and a snappy ignition curve would work wonders if that's what he's asking. Maybe even some port match and bowl porting if you wanna go crazy.
