Without some sort of solid spacer to push the axles out the taper of the bearing tends to push the axle in.. The first the that tries to stop the inward movement is the outer axle seal meeting the larger step on the axle so that grease seal gets destroyed.. It can't be serviced without removing the bearing so now the bearing is toast... Next thing to try stopping the axle moving inward will be the axle flange meeting the axle retainer... If your pushing the car the axle flange will grind away at the retainer.... Honestly probably wouldn't do allot of damage but why chance it....
