With the cam you have selected , you shouldn't be over springing things and a stiff 5/16ths pushrod should be O.K.
But I am learning as I go with these things too.
If I knew then what I know now. 
Right the I'm thinking the push rod should be at least .080 thick?
I would go with a 5/16 at .118 wall if it where me.
