Okay, this just further bolsters my search for a 68-69 4bbl 383 runner to stab in my Challenger. I'd read that positive deck bit in a couple Mopar mags as well, always wondered about it. All my 383's have been newer, and the one 69 i had was a 2bbl engine... i seem to remember that one being around .030" below deck on average. Mine was particularly bad though... deck heights were bloody all over the place.
SOOO... reading all this what i'm taking from this is that there IS a way to build a super-cheapo zero-deck or at least hokey quench engine. Find a 68-69 383 4bbl engine, pick a head gasket that will give around .040" quench and bolt some closed chamber heads on.
Is it really that simple...???
Also, are we talking ALL 68-69 383 4bbl engines here, or ONLY the actual HP engines...???
I have a 69 383 2bbl piston here , it's the same height as the 4bbl piston but it has a Shallow round dish , if I get bored I'll cc it.
There are 2 68/69 383 4bbl engines , one is Stamped HP , the other is not , but it is an HP engine with the 2bbl cam instead of the 440/375HP cam.
So yes , 68-69 4bbl shortblock , felpro composite gasket and a closed chamber head with 80cc chamber will net you a 10.0ish engine. A 70 will have the piston a little lower in the bore , I don't know how much, 71 will be even worse it appears. Otherwise plan on decking if you use the Speedpro , Diamond or KB flat top to get zero.
If you weren't on the other side of the planet I have an original 69 383 HP shortblock that would do exactly what you want.

dont even consider a 1971 engine unless its been rebuilt with some aftermarket pistons in the past. i have one and the piston deck height is .090 .
The 1971 383 (four barrel) I have has stock flat top pistons, no valve reliefs, 0.020 in the hole. The block is stamped 1970. Came out of a 1971 Newport.

My guess would be NO. I haven't been looking, but my guess is that it wouldn't be too simple to find a 40+ year old 383 that didn't need to be overbored. The deck height advantage of the 68-69 383 comes from the compression height of the piston. Therefore, as soon as you bore the block you are in the market for new aftermarket slugs, none of which are made with a 1.932" compression height. As far as I know, closest thing you can get are the Sealed Power 2315s, which are at 1.920".
Seems to me like the "simple" thing would be to have the block machined to get the zero or positive deck height you are looking for, but who knows, maybe there is an endless supply of low mile 68-69 383 shortblocks where you live.
Going my route, you would also be able to square up your block to ensure consistent deck heights for each cylinder, which would probably not be the case for an untouched factory block.

It is hard to find a low mileage 68-69 383 Im sure, let alone one that doesnt need bored.
I do have one that is SAID to have 35k miles on it and has been sitting on a pallet since 1975 SUPPOSEDLY. I wasnt too sure of this claim, but after selling the HP manifolds, carb, air cleaner and valve covers I believe it. The motor looks to be in great shape. Probably a runner but definitely a good candidate for a brush hone, rings, polished crank and bearings.
