I wanted to move this to the restoration site. I was wondering how frequently the bellhousing alignment is an issue when installing the tranny on a small block. My block doesn't seem to have these offset dowel pins mine are straight across from each other. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

If you're using a factory bell housing with factory dowel pins etc...I doubt you have to worry about any type of off-set ? At least I've never heard of that
Not true , I have a factory 70 Bellhousing and it was pretty far off. Not many people check them because they think the factory machined it correctly

Why not check it? Easier than having a problem and having to take everything back apart. Dan
Because people want the easy way out, just because you can force parts together doesn't mean they are correctly together.

Yep, check it. I had to put in offset dowels when I replace my incorrect bellhousing. Made installing the transmission a little easier.

The clutch housing was align bored at the same time the block mains were and that housing stayed with the block all through the build process.
I never knew that. Now we have matching numbers bellhousings.

Just my humble -story. I have a big block - but however: I had to replace the cracked bellhousing and got one alu bellhousing from brewers. Decided to check it (as brewers recommend) as showed in the manual - and it was inside tolerance (radial and axial), so no offside dowels necessary.
After all these years having a 440 I realized that this means having an attitude... and a budget.

Note that the original posting above shows a page from the Factory Service Manual that clearly explains how to check and correct misalignment so apparently the factory recognised an issue here.
If anybody checks theirs and decides to get offset dowels these are absolutely the ones you want. http://www.robbmcperformance.com/products/dowels.html Everybody elses are sized for Ford engines and fit way too tight.
Exactly , Ford dowel is .500 , Mopar dowel is .496 , the dowels sold by Lakewood and such are .500 FORD dowels marketed as Mopar/Ford dowels. At least 1 member cracked his block installed the Lakewood dowel.
