I am getting ready to install a Transgo TF-2 reprogramming kit, and while I'm there I want to install a trans temp gauge. My question is which line should I put it in, the front or rear?

the front

that one as it comes right from the TC, where fluid is the hottest

Do I want to check it where it's the hottest or do I want to check it on the return to see how effective my cooling system is?

LOTS of people put the sender in-the-pan. The FLASH-TEMP coming off the converter is interesting data but no really real-world operating temp.

I thought about that, I'm already installing a drain plug in the pan and if I did that I would be twice as paranoid about a leak. I'm going to look into that option further.

INSTALLING a drain-plug ? ... why not just buy a deep 904 steel pan WITH the plug ?? ...THEN put the sender on the side of that.

Budget is about over for this year. I may do that next year when I yank the motor and trans. Pan plug 6 bucks.

New pan with plug 50 bucks and then add a filter extension 25 bucks.

ISN'T the filter extension included ? ... also .. the plug-kits that I am aware of are not-so-hot.

Yep Doc you are right, k.i.s.s. put it in the pan & call it good esp as I think you need expensive/diff fitting(s) to get it in the a cooler line & in contact w the fluid. I do put the sender in the side of the pan rather than protrude from the bottom & need to pick the right place on the side so no interference w the VB EDIT the side doesn't drain as completely as the bottom but gets enough out so the pan can come off to ch the filter/adj bands (always a good idea) WO spillage
