Noticed it when driving over any slightly bumpy road surface. Finally pulled the wheels and rear drums to see where the noise was coming from. Pretty sure its the metal plate that the emergency brake cable connects to hitting the back side of the rear brake shoe. The plate seems pretty loose and just tapping it with a finger cause the same noise. have I something out of adjustment or missing?

thanks

Just about every part in the drum seems to have some kind of spring to stop rattles. I don't work on drums that often so I always have the FSM handy and do one side at a time so I have a reference.

Are both sides the same? You might find something by checking left vs right. Also If you post year/model and/or brake size, I or others may be able to post a pic to help.

look at the pin on the top of the E brake lever, the pivot pin that goes into the shoe & is held in w a small horseshoe clip. OE there is supposed to be a very thin cupped washer between the horseshoe clip & the shoe to keep tension to elim some of that play. If it's excessive could add a thin one of any type that will fit

Car is a 1970 dart with 8 3/4 rear, 1 3/4 x 10 brakes.

Yes I see the horse shoe washer you are talking about. I'll try what you said.

thanks!

I've got a pic from the FSM but can't post it... I used to past into Word but Word is not allowed as attachment any more. I can EMAIL the word document if desired.

I'd also guess a missing or broken spring.

But do remember to put a LITTLE white grease (or hi-temp silicone grease) on the contact pads on sides of the shoes where they contact the backing plate. You'll see the shiny spot on the backing plate where the shoes rub when they wiggle.

Sounds like the wave washer as mentioned might be missing or broken. Also E-brake could be out of adj. Check to make sure the e-brake cables aren't frozen. Using two people, take one drum off at a time & while one watches the movement of the cable & actuating arm for free movement, the other will hold the brake release out, so the ratchet won't catch & slowly move the e-brake pedal up & down a slight bit. Don't go too crazy with the pedal movement as you can over extend the shoes & pop a wheel cylinder. Antiseize works best for lubing the shoe contact points & star wheel.

Looking at the diagram in the manual, it appears the wave wash washer should be under the horseshoe clip? There isn't one there. I assume it should come with the brake hardware kit? When I pulled the drum I found oil everywhere from what looks like a leaking axle seal so I got to do new brakes now also.

thanks
