I bought one of these MP 175K torque converters a few years back and stuck it on a shelf. I’m considering putting it in Mrs G-bob’s 64 fury vert. Specs are 426”, 9.6:1, with ported stealth heads, performer RPM and 770 cfm vac sec street avenger carb. Cam is comp XE275HL, .525 lift, 231/237 @ .050, 110 LSA, 106 ICL. Cam’s installed 4 degrees advanced. Combo made 459 hp @ 5500 and 485 ft lb at 4500. We set up an 8 ¾ with a 2.94 sure-grip and it’ll have 28” TA radials on it. Meant to be a highway cruiser. Expecting sustained cruise rpms of 2400-2500 or so. Wondering how loose this converter is. They never really published stall numbers on them. Any ideas on whether it will work ok in cruiser? Just wondering if there will be much (too much) slippage at cruise. Planning to have it ready in time for a cruise up I-15 to MATS in April, although I've got a TON of work to do on it before then.

There is a formula to figure it out but I forget it... you know your torque and with the formula you can figure the stall based on the K factor EDIT here it is K = rpm / sqrt( torque ) rpm = K * sqrt( torque )

My opinion is that it will feel too "loose" for a cruiser. I had one behind my 470 in a Cuda, and it felt mushy. I am use to a manual trans, so perhaps it is just an adjustment, but I expect rapid response to throttle input. However given the torque of the motor and the loose converter, goosing the throttle did nothing but increase RPMs (that is, it only slipped) until over 4K.
My experience is that the formula that Mr.P Body posted was pretty close, with that converter in my car stalling a little over 4K. I found it annoying to be cruising at highway speeds, and goose the throttle and have nothing but an RPM increase. You really had to go deep into the throttle to feel response in the seat of your pants.
That Fury is fairly heavy and your motor is making good torque. My guess is that you will have a similar experience, particularly with the highway gears.
That converter is better suited behind a more mild engine from my perspective.

that converter is no where near where it needs to be for that combo. will it run and drive, yes. will it give the best ET for the combo? No
Meant to be a highway cruiser. Expecting sustained cruise rpms of 2400-2500 or so. He never mentioned anything about ET. I do agree with you that if it were a car intened for the track it could use more converter and a bunch more gear

Cam's too big or the ratio should be 3.55, IMO

Sorry for the cruiser in the race section question, but this is where I hang out and knew I'd get the best info.
Besides, Mrs G-bob takes great pictures of race cars and this car is for her.
We know the 2.94's are not going to be anywhere close to optimum for 1/4 or even 1/8 mile action, but I don't think this car will ever see a track.
It's a 64 fury convertible that I've been promising her for 3 years would be ready for MATS. As long as she can smoke the tires a little, and it cruises good, she'll be happy.

wow! just checked out the fury on your site. I love it! Is that how it sits now, or is there more? If there's more, post up!

not a problem Bob like I said it will work if you already have it. if not I would go with a good 10"street converter.

I used the 166k lockup for a 904 in my 5th in front of both a 998 and an A500. car had a mild 360, stock long block, home ported heads, headers, RPM air gap, and a 600 eddie. gears were 3.55's, tires 27", car weight ~3900lbs w/o driver. The 166k would brake stall to about 2300 or so, and flash to about 2800. worked real well in the car for the combo. was a bit of a sloppy converter, engaging/disengaging lockup would drop cruise RPM by about 400 RPM. I miss that unit. I took it out when I replaced the 360 with a roller cammed, magnum headed 318 because I discovered cracks in the converter hub.
assuming you'd be similar weight, but more torque and more gearing, I'd say a 166K will stall even higher than it did in my lower power/lower torque environment, so I'd say the 175k is going to feel way to loose and sloppy for this combo, and probably flash to ~3500+....
if you were looking for a cheap converter, I'd probably start out looking at a factory high stall unit, I've seen those advertised for about $110....
