I am going to prime the oil pump and would like to turn the crank as well but I have the radiator and fan etc. in already and its alittle difficult to get to the crank. If I am using the drill to turn the oil pump would it be ok to have someone bump the starter (with ignition key) to turn the crank?

Thanks.

Either do that or periodically bump the starter relay terminals while priming the engine. It don't hurt to interrupt the priming while you bump the starter.

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

I would have a buddy do it or use this

start drill when it builds pressure turn engine over for 30 seconds or so while continuing to run drill keeping pressure up. Will do that a couple times. Cool thing is you have a hydraulic cam it will pump the lifters up as well so less clattering when start up comes.

I then like to install the dizzy and pre time with carb off then install carb and start. If you have a manual pump it must be blocked off or you get a mess.

You may have trouble finding the 2 sweet spots for the heads. You'll end up getting aggravated. There is room for your ratchet/socket if you use just the right length of extension. It'll be worth it to buy it. Several bucks is nothing compared to your investment in the eng & keeping your cool. EDIT take 5 minutes to read "break in secrets" at www.mototuneusa.com

You don't need to turn the crank. Once the pressure in the oil pump is achieved it's putting oil to the rod and main bearings. I'm assuming you lubed the bearings when the engine was assembled? If all of your clearances are correct you'll be fine.

Also, I always pack the pump with vaseline prior to priming to avoid an air pocket...it'll suck oil immediately...

Don't you have to rotate the engine to prime the top end?

Some people do that , I have just poured oil over the rockers before torquing down the shafts, stamped steel rockers , used assembly lube on adjustables.
