If you engine is reasonably clean, a magnet on an extension works well... Stubborn ones may require some carb cleaner to get the varnish off. Otherwise, pull the intake and rocker arms and grab em...Big blocks are nice with no water in the intake.. just a $25 gasket... Just to add note that back in the day Solder Seal use to make a product called lifter quiet that did a great job of cleaning the lifters in a few hudred miles, eliminating the need to replace them.

Pull the valve covers and rocker assembly, remove the pushrods and pull the lifters out with a lifter extracting tool. No need to remove the intake.

I've always had success with using a telescoping magnet and fish them out Good luck with whatever you decide to do. saw the video you posted of your car from the Coronet picture thread, sure sounds good! Looks good too!!

I've done it with a coat hanger...now getting the new one in is a trick.

It takes longer to pull AND reinstall the intake by the time you get done with the wiring, throttle linkage, gasket cleaning and pan cleaning. He just wants to swap out some lifters. What I didnt say last time was the fact that sometimes the lifter will not pass through directly above that lifter due to rough castings but I have always just passed it to the known wide enough passage and put them in the same way. Its a "no-brainer".

I had a pair of mechanical fingers that I cut the end off so when you extended them they would go under the snap ring or catch real good in the lifter. Pull them right out and install.

Through the valve cover is very sanitary. Why break an intake seal when you don't have to? Done is several times, very fast, very easy. And rare earth magnets ROCK!!!!

If you have a stubborn lifter or 12, a lifter removal tool is always helpful. I don't know what you have in your area, but any well stocked parts supply house should have them in their specialty tool section. Relatively inexpensive as well. I think I paid $12-$18 for mine a few years ago.
It's a long tool with a spring loaded T handle on one end and retracting claws on the other. Basically, you hook the claws into the top of the lifter and pull up on the T handle. Upwards pressure on the T handle pushes the claws out further into the lifter to aid bite.
This tool is a necessity when working on ANY AMC. I'm up to 5 AMC's, and even the low-miler needs lifters. Its got two dead ones for sure!
