I just looked under my kids mechanical distributor cap... rust like you would not believe. I can not belive it.. I read on here a while back about squirting wd40, but I didn't think it would this bad. Just a warning for you guys to check it out.

I mostly enjoy golfing in the 70's.. The eighties are just too hot, and 60's I usually get chilly !!

Just put a MSD in my car I had laying around. Rust like you said. Read the post on here from a while back. Cleaned it with emry cloth and used WD 40. Working good.

Bought a extra pickup just in case.

...1st noticed that about 4 yrs ago. If it set's very long, it amazing how much rust you can dig out of there!

This is a good reminder. I read a post about this a while back. When I bought one, I sprayed the inside with Zep45- a commercial grade WD-40 like spray. It hasn't rusted a bit in 2 years. My buddies, on the other hand, was starting to rust pretty good when we had it opened up to shorten his advance curve so he could run more initial timing.

those things rot terrible in a new york minute. not sure if it's materials, ozone, moisture or all of the above. ended up disassembling mine glass beading the internals and spraying it with a preservative coating.

I took the reluctor off a and painted it bought the cap with the holes drilled in it and never had a problem again. Also put a little lock tite on the rotor screws they have a tendency to back out.

Cap after cap that racers took off at the CC at Norwalk, were rusty..

EDIT>. Not the cap. the reluctor and misc. parts under there.. I heard that their terminals are aluminum with brass coating.

I too live where there is high humidity, but no rust under mine.

I did drill a couple of 1/8 holes in my MSD cap when I put it all together two years ago. Had the cap off last week, and it still looks good.

Not just rust on the cap but the reluctor and pickup also.
The Firecore Dist. doesn't seem to have these issues
