Hello guys,

I'm trying to help a friend. He's preparing his LA block and having some issues with the cam bores.

I can see something similar in this MM Mike's blog.
http://www.musclemotorsracing.com/muscle-mike-blog/82-the-real-reason-my-cam-wont-turn.html

I think he will need to hone the cam bearing bores but he can't find oversize cam bearings. Do you know if this is available or if there's any other option?

Thanks,

I think typically the reason they need to be honed is they are not installed properly, also I think they scrape the bearings not the bores. I had that problem one time and was told by several people to just scrape the bearings, I wasn't gonna do it so I pulled all the bearings back out, ran a wire brush on a drill through all the bores so they were super cleanand was VERY carefull to get them all in there straight and I could twirl the cam with two fingers. I do know of at least one motor where they just scraped the bearings to get clearance and the guy has been driving it daily for 4 years with no issue

Mopar is famous for not getting the cam bores the correct I.D. I have scraped many cam bearings, one at a time, to get the cams to install properly. If you don't have a cam bearing tool take the block to someone who does and remove all of them but the rear one, install the cam in it annd see if it will rotae easily or not. If not look at the tight spots, they shine and scrape the shine off with a BEARING KNIFE, do not try to hone it Once that is fixed mmove to the next one, do one at a time until there all done One of the machine shops that I use to used in SO CA used a brake hone to hone the block cam holes(journals to the proper size and then install new standard cam bearings. I don't live close to them anymore so I have to do it myself (scrape method) now EDITED for content, sorry for rushing earlier IHTMSN

I have a fix to this problem that i have tried on several motors.

Take an old cam and cut (i did it with an anglegrinder with cutoff wheel) grooves on every bearing journal along the cam. this will make it cut the bearings. use some fine sandpaper to smooth the journals. install cam with oil and turn a few turns.
I promise it will work.

Ok guys! So far so good.

One thing.. he complains that the block part of the journal... where we install the bearing doesn't have a good finishing. Has some burr.. and doesn't have a rectified finish.

That's why he wanted to hone it... but as I look there's no oversized cam bearing.. I mean if there was any outter diameter oversized he could do that... but I havefound just for chevys.

Anybody knows it for mopars?

This is all I do.... I cut a old cam for this purpose

Ok, is like a groove in the middle of the cam journals?

No, use a file or whatever you want and cut the cam juornals front to rear to make the cut smooth the bearing out I've never done it that way but many on here do

I cut a groove in each cam journal... I used a .040 thick
cut off wheel... slip it in and give it a few turns

dont you have to worry about peeling off a whole layer or making it thin?

Nope it just cuts any tight spots... being that its
a full cam its in there straight... and I've never
had a cam bearing problem doing it this way

the fit of the cam is important.let us know how things go.you dont want any problems by forcing the cam in.i may have extensive wear on my cam from tight barings.i have to measure yet.

It's called a "cutter cam" and many machine shops have been doing it this way for years. Is it the "absolute" right way to do it, not really, but the "right" way generally gets to be expensive and not really neded in 90% of applications.

A quality machine shop will do this automatically as part of the cam bearing install proceedure.

I guess now, it Qualifies as a Quality Machine shop. mike

When cutting a old cam do you cut the groove all the way around the old cam or just partialy? Can you post up a pic of the cam you did this to?

You cut across the came journals, from front to back. I like to cut them on a slight angle. A hacksaw works fine (but takes a while).

The slotted cam may not want to go in right away with new bearings, so I made a little handle I can bolt to the nose of the cam. I put the cam in as far as it will go, and turn it slowly as I lightly push the cam further in. The slotted journals cut their way in nicely.
