I have a 1969 Cuda 440 with a Hemi 18 spline trans in it. I was wondering who here has modified one on the street with making it a crash box or face plating? I'm looking to redo the trans because I'm having shifting issues under high RPM and trans popping out of gear sometimes... I thought possibly going to a G-Force or Richmond 5sp. Please give me some input on what you guys have done or have had experience in the past.

Thanks
Rob

Do the face-plate on third and fourth at least
First and second can be slick or pro-shift.
I had my Richmond face-plated and it works perfectly

Did you run the car on the street also or just raced it?

I run it hard on the street and full throttle on the track leaving on the 2-step and it holds up well and doesn't miss a gear with a Long V-gate shifter.Make sure you get the HD Liberty modified side cover if you go with the 833 trans

I am currently just running an old school Hays MK XII plate and a Ram sprung hub bronze disc.It does good on the street but it bites too hard for the track.

I have the McCleod dual disc set up boy there is no slippage at all with that set up... I noticed when it heats up there is no easing out at a red light car just jumps off the line...

The cover is just a modified stock unit. The shift lever shafts are tool steel and they aren't machined for O-rings.They also have been upgraded with 3/8"threads for increased strength where you fasten the levers instead of the wimpy 5/16" stockers. The cover is machined for a positive lip seal that you can replace from the outside if it ever leaks

I had one in the car for a while until I started breaking sliders and gears,I split 2 third gear sliders and trimmed all the teeth off third gear before I realized it was too stiff for racing use with traction

Lol last time out at the track with the car was Oct 0f 2009 at a mopar event. Mind you I run a ford 9" with moser axles detroit locker. I dumped the clutch at 5k I broke the pinion yoke off the rear plus the u-joint. I was in shock when the pinion yoke broke off.. Now I have a spool with billet yoke and new drive shaft with 1350 jojnts. I doubt it will break again. I this the hemi 18 spline will hold up well...

Well I guess you are learning the first rule of stick racing, build it from the rear forward.I really would recommend an aftermarket carrier for that 9" like the Strange or Moser unit with a good pinion bearing support as well

Gus...how fast (ET and MPH) is your car?

How much to build a trans (clutch and all) similar to your setup?

I haven't been able to hook it up yet on my one and only time at the track this summer but spinning through first gear it went 7.13 at 99.45 on a humid 92 degree day I don't know if thats any good or not, this was my first 1/8 mile race.
Plate was NOS E-bay $140.00
Flywheel used Hays 143 tooth $50.00
Richmond 5-Speed got from buddy $1900.00
Face-plate mods and cryo treat on the gears with me building the box $850.00
New Ram disc $180.00
Long V-gate shifter $525.00
Figure 400-800 misc for TO bearing, pilot, bell, yoke, shaft, mount, bolts etc.
Add an entire weekend for cutting and boxing the torsion crossmember, fabbing a new trans crossmember, clutch linkage etc...
Not a cheap drivetrain for sure
