i just cant figure this out, my basicly stock 318 dripps alot of oil around the plate that the oilfilter seals against:(
this motor never had any problems with oil leaks before i took it out of the car some years ago, the only thing i have done to it is that the heads have been of it and rockers have been of the heads to have a look at the cylinders and see how the rockers and shaft was doing, and the oilfilterplate was borrowed and put on the 340 that took its place.. when putting the 318 in the car again i just put it all togheter and i installed another oilfilterplate with a new gasket i had lying around and now the thing just wont seal..
where did i do wrong? i just cant get it...
any sugestions?

Make sure that the plate is flat and I use a liberal coating of gungrease on the gasket when installing.

forgot to write that i did check it for flattnes on a big chunk of steelplate i have and from what i could see it was flat, could the whole filterplate be misshaped, from being torqued down hard in a block that may have the grove alitle shalower?
never thought about any grease just installed the gasket dry since it just didnt want to pop out again after i test fited it into its possision dry, i will try that:)
thanks:)

Felpro sells a large outer circular gasket that is thicker than the one in the 3 piece MP kit. As said clean the perimeter good and use some cement on the gasket and not sure about the plate being warped but I'd get another used one so you dont have to mess w this again. But if you didn't use any cement you may be OK. Do ya feel lucky

In over 40 years never used a sealer other than grease on it. If the plate is flat and the block surface clean and the plate center does not touch the flat surface the same as teh outer sealing surface - no additional sealer glue should be needed. All the grease basically does is hold the gasket in place. Use of sealer makes it bit%% if you need to remove it for some reason. It is such a nice place to get at.

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!
