If it's anything like Subaru has had since the 80's, there's another cable from the shift fork to the master cylinder area. When the clutch is in all the way and you're on an incline, you can take your foot off the brake and the car won't roll backwards.
Basically it gives you time to move your right foot to the gas pedal without rolling backwards on a hill.
I have mine adjusted to release the brakes just after releasing the clutch.
They can be very nice if they're adjusted correctly.
If you ever find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

do you have the EVIC? if so, press the home button (i think thats the one) on the steering wheel when youre in park and go to PERSONAL SETTINGS. you can turn it off from there.
if you dont have evic do this within 90 seconds: center the steering wheel shift to neutral apply parking brake start engine release the clutch pedal rotate the wheel one-half turn to the left press ESP OFF 4 times within 20 seconds rotate steering wheel back to center and then an additional half-turn to the right turn ign OFF and then back on
if it worked, the ESP/TCS light will blink several times.
to turn it back on, do it again.
I Hate Hill Start Assist. it messes me up
all this info is in the owners manual and you can download it from the Dodge website for free
It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.

WOW! And these engineers get paid to come up with stuff like this.
I have Pixie-Dust and will do this at 10 on a Thursday. In August. After 3 beers. Then what will happen. What will the result be?

IMO if you need hill assist you shouldn't be driving a stick.
I have a couple times used the e-brake when at a stop on a steep hill when the next guy behind me has crawled up to within an inch of my bumper. Very rare that's needed but there have been a couple times...
