I have a 71 Cuda 340 N96 A31(3.91 gears) package Early March SPD car with no build sheet and was wondering what rear end center section (741, 742, 489 case number) should come on the car from the factory??? The guy I baught the car from told me that the drive train was all original. It currently has a 741 with 3.91 sure grip, but looks like the bolts that hold the case have been taken off at some point. Does anyone else have a similar car, if so what case center section does your car have?? Any input would be much appreciated!

Did they actually put any 741 or 742 in car in 1971 or afterwards? Aren't there cutoff dates for those rears?

I was thinking that the car should have a 489 case with the 7290 yoke as well, but this document I found shows that it could have a 741 or 489 according to the dates the rear ends were produced???? I'm still interested in what rear end case numbers that are original to their car if they own a 71 340 Cuda with the A31 package???

742 third-members disappeared with the 1968 model year.

741 third-members disappeared with the 1972 model year.

I THINK the only A-bodies originally equipped with 489 castings are '69 big block versions.

All performance E-bodies came with 489 castings.
