Ok here is a pic of my $10.00 lighten sun shell..Hey it can't hurt

And a pic of the 5 clutch front drum for who might want to see it. stock one on the left-5 clutch on the right see how high the snap ring groove is.

At the last pic is a input shaft. Look at oil feed hole where I got in mark in red. I have 4 input shafts here. This is the only one with that hole. And this is the shaft I had in the car. I want to use one of the other shafts..But I not sure what this feed hole is. Anyone know ?

It's a lubrication feed for the input shaft bushing. Oil return from the cooler is fed into the mainshaft and through a drilled passage in the mainshaft to the small bushing in the rear drum and then through another passage to this hole to feed the bushing for the input shaft.

OK so is there a year change here ..Why do the other shafts do not have it ?..Is it OK to use a shaft that does not have this hole ? OK I see that hole is in the other shaft but not on the bearing surface but below it. Thanks

Bill there is still snow on the ground I got time

Not sure on the year of the changes but the lube hole did change location slightly. The other style that does not have the lube hole where you have circled has it located behind the journal area. Still fed from the same hole in the back of the shaft though. The lockup shafts are different yet again.

As long as your spline count is the same, they should interchange. Earlier models had fewer splines and a slightly smaller shaft size. As far as the lubrication hole location, I can't say for sure which is better but my preference would be the one with the hole centered in the bushing.

In the picture of your input shaft is that a sealing ring groove on the retainer below the red square? If so it is a 1978 and up input shaft.

Good Luck with the trans build. Getting ready to do the same here. I always take my time and double check everything. As you said there is still snow on the ground.

Drum on left is a narrow bush and the other is a wide. If changing over, make sure rest of components match

Good Luck

The input shaft with the bushing lube hole is pre-'74, in '74 they changed the lube circuit so that the bushing is lubed by the output shaft; at the same time they eliminated the front clutch lube hole in the support, big mistake IMHO.
