Okay so I have never owned a big block until about two months ago, I bought a truck that came with what I was told a 71 383 block. I was moving it around the garage today and thought I would check it out. I found the date it is a 71 year model, but I can't find the cubic inch. On small blockes it tells the CI on the opposite side of the the block as the date. This big block says 430 where a small block tells the CI. My question is where are the numbers that I can decode to tell me what I have. Thanks Chris

Casting numbers on side..check front of block where below where head would be..there should be some letters or numbers.. you also cond check pan rail..

Should be big numbers on the side of the block, sort of under where the spark plugs would go.

I checked oil pan rails, and for any pad under or around where heads are for stamped numbers with no luck. I will look at the cast in numbers but I'm sure it said 430.

Numbers say its a 440.

BTW, a 383 won't have that pad; if it's there, it would have to be an RB, not a B. Easiest way to differentiate the two versions of the big block w/o even looking at any numbers.

Thats the first place I looked, it has tooling marks on it. Not sure why but it does.

You answered the question that I ask even if it didn't answer my question it was me that was sent everyone for a loop. Like I said I'm not familiar with big blocks. I guess the deal I got was a little sweeter than I first thought. The casting date is 11-71 so would that be considered a 72? Either way it was free and looks to be in good condition. Although looks can be decieving. Now to find something to do with it.
