I have an 09 Ram like yours and a older 2500 with the Cummins. I cant justify these diesels anymore. Everything on them cost through thr room including simply changing the oil. Our injector pump went out and that was big money. I bought this 09 Ram with the new Hemi and it has plenty of power. Way more than my 07 Hemi....WAY more. Not to mention if it or the trans dies I will let Chryslers lifetime warranty worry with that.

Ok guys, I get it. Some of you have a great big oversized 3/4 or 1 ton truck that is extremely rough riding and if its a diesel, expensive to maintain, I dont, I have a 1500, and according to the published information, I can tow 8250lbs.......so what the eff is the issue here....Im not pulling a 32' stacker......I have posted the weights of the trailer and the capabilities of the truck, but maybe I am not reading it right so I have taken the liberty of posting the website where I gathered my information... now please do not pay attention to the published 10,400lb towing capacity as my truck is not properly equipped and I would not want to confuse anyone...

Do any of the truck makers still showed the "Combine vechicle gross weights" for towing? I'm wondering if that is the number shown on the bottom of the add in your link? I think the CVGR on my 2006 3500 single wheel is right at 19,800, the same year and equipted 2500 was 16,800 I think. I don't have a clue waht the specs where on the 1500, sorry

Joshking440, I am sure most of us do not mean to disrespect your decision on your combo. As you point out on paper your combo works, in reality it wont (IMHO) It may "pull the load" but it will do it struggling to maintain stability.

Consider the senario of any freeway driving in normal traffic when there is road construction going on with lane changes, paving unevenness, a retaining wall with just enough room for a small car in the other lane. you will wish the trailer was empty or that you had a 2500. This may seem like the worst case senario but it is one of hundreds that come up.

Like I said before it may "pull" it but you will be white knuckle and stain your shorts more than once when the trailer is loaded with a car, generator, tools, small compressor, a full mini firdge ect. It is not so much about the engine/trans/gear as it is about the truck's suspension and weight pulling it.

I had a similar setup and had to go to an open car trailer. I could not afford nor wanted a "bigger truck" as I only tow a few times a year

I had an inclosed Haulmark 20' standard height trailer Here is my set up now, a 07 1500 quad cab, Hemi with factory trailer tow package, and the truck now has a nice fiberglass topper for maximum storage area. I am very pleased with its practicality.

I've owned both gas and diesel trucks and found the diesel to be cheaper to maintain and operate.

I agree its not enough truck to load it to the hill, but my truck is rated for 8,100lbs and all Im sticking in the trailer is a 3,100lb duster, so Im ok.

not everybody can afford a special truck for everything or a biga**ed dually. Hell that 1500 is plenty good. we used to haul 2 1000 lb steers to market in 1/2 ton 48 Ford truck and spray feilds haulling 250 gallons of water around. 1.5 ton trucks were/are hauling 150 - 200 bushels of 60 lb/bu wheat to market. Cars were towing Air streams. People didn't have Sunday go to meeting trucks. You towed and worked with what you had. Some people still have to do that.
PS: People towing trailers at 80 MPH shouldn't be towing. Just because the speed limit is 0/75 you don't have to drive that fast. Remember that you are towing and no matter what the load rating is you have to allow for it. Stopping distances and mauverability are greatly reduced with a trailer. 5 or ten MPH really don't amount to squat in a couple hundred mile trip. If you have to be some where that few minutes sooner - leave earlier. You will have a safer more comfortable ride and save gas to boot.

Is that the story you plan to tell the DOT cop after he puts you on the scales and tells you you're overloaded?

Like Tony said, its all find and dandy what you did 20 years ago, but that's not today. If you're in an accident and overloaded, a lawyer is going to have a field day taking everything you own.

Is was Bob George who got stopped not that long ago and got a nice hefty fine, and sent to get his CDL IIRC.

it depends on what the laws are there. In va. If the truck has car tags then the trailer carrys the weight that means the title of the trailer has to be registered for more than what ever the trailer weights and contents. the truck doesn't matter. if you have truck tags then the title of the truck has to be registered for the weight of the truck, trailer and contents. So you can tow the trailer with a volkswagon long as the trailer is registered for enough weight you might die but they don't care about that. They just want to get our money.

In PA if the trailer is registered at over 10,000lbs its the truck plate that must be registered to cover both the truck AND the trailer as far as weight. They call it registered "in combination". It doesn't matter if this is the law in the state you are from or not. IF you tow through here, you have to comply same as any other states laws you plan to tow through.

You can't put car plates on a truck here, but there are different weight classes for truck plates and the registration price increases accordingly.

The article in the archives about Bob George is a good read.

To the OP, what is the GVW of your trailer? I know many companies register them just under that 10,000 limit.

the GVW of the trailer is 9,900 lbs. We scaled the trailer at 4380 with everything but the car in it, which ways 3190

I would'nt worry much, just get some dual sway bars.

My 18ft toy hauler dry weight 4370lb. now add 100gal of water and everything else, comes in around 8k last time i weighed it, but being only 18ft and people seeing it, they would not think it would be that heavy and nobody would say it was to much for a 1/2 ton truck, but in fact weighs the same as these bigger 24+ft trailers. I have no problems towing it with a older 1/2 ton dodge.

1st thats a nice trailer.

I think this has been covered so many times and those who don't own a diesel will defend pulling their trailer with a 1/2 to the death. To each their own. I think most folks on here are just trying to point out that it is safer for everyone if you have the right tool for the job. Not to mention the legal issues.

I towed an enclosed a few times with my old 96 5.9 gas ram and then with an 04 hemi ram. Neither seemed to have a real hard time and I could have towed like that for ever I suppose. I just hope those, like me for a while, that have the it pulls with no problem attitude, never get in any kind of accident.

then I broke down and bought my diesel and the whole experience was night and day. Not only is it safer, it feels safer and I maintain the right tags to make me legal.

That is an awesome Truck and a nice trailer. You will be fine if you are careful and take your time. If you just stay on your game just like every normal person that is towing SHOULD, and use extra caution around those tricky situations, you should be fine.

I would definately use the tow/haul and let the thing tow in OD if it wants. There is NO REASON to not use OD as long as the trans is not hunting and as long as the converter stays locked.

I would suggest you load up you trailer with what ever you plan on taking to the track, go to the closest truck stop and put the rig on the scales so you know for sure what your "package" weight is. If you are grossly over weight for your rig then you have a problem and your DOT will nail you if you are caught. If you are slightly overweight find som places to lose it in the trailer.

Also make sure you take care of the truck if you are going to tow near it's capacity. No o/d and maybe add an auxilury cooler, and change the fluid often. Deffinitly use the load bars. Good luck and nice truck and trailer!

I'm sure you answered alot of questions in your head before you purchased the truck and trailer.
I'll assume you won't be towing every day or in mountains.
So I think you have plenty of truck. Especially with the load bars and electronic trailer sway control.
I can only assume Dodge tested these trucks to the stated limit. I know Ford does and this would include emergency lane changes at high speeds.
