No one has mentioned it, but E rated tires inflated to 80 psi on the tow vehicle are a must. As other's have said, trailer brake controller, maybe an equalizer hitch.
You probably have a 545RFE in it, so you might want to stay out of OD while towing.

Take from a guy that does towing for a living, you mite feel okay, but your not. I do some krazy stuff, and get away with it, and hope DOT never catches me

Of course I have a brake controller, a prodigy p3.
The truck has a "towing" capacity of 8250 as equipped. which means 4400lb trailer with 3200lb car make 7600 lbs and since dont weigh 650lbs i would assume im good, and as far as brakes, i would be willing to bet my 1500 has much bigger brakes than anyones 2500 from more than 4 or 5 years ago....

not everybody can afford a special truck for everything or a biga**ed dually. Stopping distances and mauverability are greatly reduced with a trailer. 5 or ten MPH really don't amount to squat in a couple hundred mile trip. If you have to be some where that few minutes sooner - leave earlier. You will have a safer more comfortable ride and save gas to boot.
Is that the story you plan to tell the DOT cop after he puts you on the scales and tells you you're overloaded?
Like Tony said, its all find and dandy what you did 20 years ago, but that's not today. If you're in an accident and overloaded, a lawyer is going to have a field day taking everything you own.
Is was Bob George who got stopped not that long ago and got a nice hefty fine, and sent to get his CDL IIRC.

it depends on what the laws are there. In va. If the truck has car tags then the trailer carrys the weight that means the title of the trailer has to be registered for more than what ever the trailer weights and contents. the truck doesn't matter. if you have truck tags then the title of the truck has to be registered for the weight of the truck, trailer and contents. So you can tow the trailer with a volkswagon long as the trailer is registered for enough weight you might die but they don't care about that. They just want to get our money.

I'd say they are right up there with them, and I KNOW you absolutely KILL the 94-98 era 2500 series Dodge trucks.
I would be shopping for some "E" tires though. I ran those on my 95 and it felt like I threw an anchor out. Took a little more "oomph" to get them suckers rolling.
I did finally aquire an 01 2500 CTD for pulling duties back around 03. It was a huge improvement, especially after moving to the desert SW where long steep grades are in abundance.

The unladen weight of the trailer as it left the factory should be stated on the traler birth certificate, look closely at that and weigh it the first chance you get both empty and again when you are loade up and going to the races. The first new custom built I bought was supposed to weih right at 2900 lbs according to the salesman   Wrong, it weighed 4380 empty when I pick it up at thwe factory  Dang salesman anyway  That was a Pace Shadow 22 ft. 7000 lb gross conventional hieght with one 120 V flourences(SP) light, two 12 v. lights, one overhead vent, four 120 electrical outlets and a cross waist high storage cabinet, no battery, no winch, no tonque jach  verify your wiegths  truck too
