header flange/ports are the same but the heads are raised 3/4" up & outward at a 45 angle on a 440 compared to a 400 which could affect the fit of the rest of the header in a tight compartment. The slotted shaft in the 400 dist will be too short for the 440. Oil pan/valve covers the same & most if not all brackets are identical. The A/
C compressor is the same but I think some of the mounting brackets for it are different between a B and an RB.

intake depends on what heads you use. and the dizzy will fit
with and adapter to gain more valve cover clearance.
but this is being picky lol.

that's assuming he is using stage 6 heads and wants to put a 440 intake on the 400/383 ... also ... your dist scenerio only works with 440 to 400/383 .

i'm being picky

The valley pan rails are shorter on the 400 too.

Yes you need a spacer to use a 440 distributor in a 400/383 but it has nothing to do with the clearance to valve cover. It has to do with the RB 440 having a higher deck height than the than the big blocks. The 383/400 distributor will not fit on a 440 because the shaft is not long enough to reach the intermediate shaft drive slot. The reason that th intakes won't fit is for the same reason, the higher deck the farther the heads are apart.
Yes there is a spacer that can be used on the RB distributor so that it can be used on the low deck BB engines

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

WOW! you guys sure put me in my place. adapter has everything to do with clearance,
since i run a HEI style dist cap on my RB distributer on my low deck 470.
wouldn't clear without the adapter. and that stage 6 head game on a low deck with
an RB manifold works just peachy. think I'll go pick some.

When you get thru blowing your horn and patting yourself on the back go back and READ the original post , the guy is asking about putting 400 parts ON TO the 440 block , not the other way around .

evidnetly 2fast must be assuming that everybody uses the HEI type distributor. IN OEM or standard cap sizing distributors the only thing different is the that the shaft is longer on the 440 therefore the reason for using a spacer when using a RB distributor in a BB engine. They BB/RB use the same cap housing and cap diameters are the same as is vac advance system.

point being that all the parts are interchangable to some point if you really
get down to it. and yes I did get it backwards. my appologizes. carry on.
