In the 1960's the Max Wedge was HOT but too much to be trully streetable so I hear.
If I bought a 440 block had it bored.055 over, with forged 12.5:1 Flat Top Pistons, CNC ported Max Wedge size Stealth heads, A&A Max Wedge cross ram, twin 650 E-85 DP carbs,600+ Lift solid Roller cam, 7.1 forged rods/4.25 inch forged crank for a total of 511 CID vs the original 426 CID would this be a better street/strip engine?
What do ya'll think?
I dont know if "better"..i think it would sure be faster! Back in the day the 426 Max Wedge w/ 13 to 1 CR and .570 lift cam was rated at 425 HP but probably produced around 500 HP. By todays standards that is almost a "mild" street/strip motor! It just was'nt done back then and cars were suposed to drive on the high way

Better? Of course! Street/strip? Depends on what you wanna put up with. The 12.5:1 pistons automatically minimizes the "street" part--but who am I to talk? My motor's 13.5:1 & I 'm building a Chev with 14:1. I have no problem running racefuel in a week-end cruiser. The x-ram may be a little tough on the street, too as they're definitely not low RPM manifolds, but I love 'em, too. I say build it, tell everyone it's a 383 with an old x-ram & go win some $$$$$$$$$$$

There are much more radical engines driving on the street nowadays then the Max Wedge engines that were stock. And they had 2 versions of the 426 Max Wedge. One was 13.5 comp and the other was 11.0 as thats the one they figured people would drive on the street. Both were rated at 425 HP but like was said they made more like 500 HP. Oh and the cam was only .520 lift with about 308 advertised duration. In 64 they dropped the 13.5 eng to 12.5 as they found out it made the same HP. Ron

I had a 64 Plymouth Factory Aluminum front end car in high school (mid 70's).. Drove it every day to school and work..(Centerline Wheels) Man that thing was raspy.. Had a ball with it.. All Stock down to the fuel system and ignition. Put 4.88"s in it with slicks, a good converter, and ran low 11's @ 121mph all day @ OCIR in So. Cal.. Held down in High School too.. I sure miss that car.. Chris..

I would step up on the carbs.... remember that E-85 requires 30% more fuel than gas... a wider lobe separation helps on the street(less pressure in the low rpm's) but that should be very street-able, you might not like the mpg

I thought E-85 would be a natural as Norwalk, OH. has 2 stations that sell it. It sells for $.30-.50 cheaper than 87 octane and it has an octane rating of 95-105 depending upon whether it is E-70, E-75, or E-85. Thanks guys this seems like the combo for a "thristy" street cruiser/ weekend strip bruiser. A 22 gal fuel cell + a 2 1/2-3 Gal "Moon" tank should at 4mph give an 88 mile range with an emergency reserve.
