Getting an axle bearing replaced, primarily because the outer seal was leaking.
and I couldnt replace it, unless the whole nearing assembly needed to be removed, to even get to it.
Anyhoo....My machine shop, "Ed" called and told me there used to be available, a kit, which replaced the whole assembly.
Bearing,seal,and the adjuster assembly?
I was just wondering, if anyone knows, if the kit, like that, is still available?
Just for next time!
Thanks,
Robert.

OEM set 7 bearings, seals and gaskets are available, but the stock adjusters are not.

Sealed, ball style "Green bearing" kits with new retainers are readily available.

E-mail me if you are interested.

The OUTER SEAL is a DUST seal, it only has GREASE behind, if you are leaking gear oil the INNER seal in the tube is the problem.

It takes some work, and hopefully it hasn't been destroyed yet, but the bearing can be removed without destroying the outer plate, it involves removing the outer race first, cut the cage to remove the rollers, cut and remove the outer sleeve that goes on after the bearing to make it easier to pull the bearing off, replace the outer seal and reinstall the set 7 bearing which comes with that second ring that goes on after the bearing.

Done it many times and I have extra plates too from junk axles. NOS bearing kits from mopar came with both retaining plates, buy a set 7 bearing and the 2 seals and you have a complete bearing set, too bad they went NS1 years ago ...

Would be a great product for Mopar Performance or Mancini Racing to reproduce. They probably know who the original vendor for that adjuster is.

I picked up several of the original kits years ago when they started to dry up in the parts system. I found a Dodge dealer in the mid-west who had a bunch of kits on the shelf and I bought a few of them.

Adjusters are discontinued, but you can find them in old stock sometimes.

I use National # 51098 inner seal for passenger car Dana 60 rears.

If you know what you are doing the bearings can be removed without damaging the retainer. But like john said. it is the inner seal that is leaking and causing the problem. There should be no lubricant getting to the outer seal to leak unless the inner seal is leaking. The axle bearings are packed (much like the front wheel bearings) and are not lubricated with lubricant from teh rear end. if rear end lube gets into them it washes the grease out of the bearing and then leaks into the brake drum and creats grabby brakes and a mess.

got it all back together.
The machine shop only charged 35.00 to remove and replace the old bearing and seal.
I did put a new seal, in the inner side too, while it was all apart.
I thought perhaps, the gear oil was too full...
causing it to wash out the seal and leak, but I checked it and the level was a little below the fill hole. So I guess the inner seal just was leaking.
Thanks for all the replies and information!

You did pack the wheel bearings with good grease before putting it back together didn't you?

greese for the bearing

oil for the chunk in housing

a leak on the tube seal will wash the greese out of bearings,so make sure its repacked with greese on install

I use a greese needle on mine to get it in between the rollers and cage

Yeah,
everythings greased, I even greased the inner seal all up, to keep the spring from popping out.

Last time I checked, Brewers had the whole kit of
bearings and adjusters complete.

I just had the bearings and seals done on my
8 3/4 at a local place, I pulled the axles and dropped them off.
These guys knew what they were doing and my adjusters were in excellent condition.
But I almost fell down at the price..
New Bearing set $80....PER SIDE !
Seals about $25 ea x4
Labor $50 / side..They were kind enough to give me a 10% discount on parts...
Total $350...
OUCH...Yes I live in the Big City and everything is more here,
But they did it right and it is really nice not to listen to the grindy noise anymore...
So the Ebay price in not that bad...

NO Kisses, but a 4 hour turn around on the job.
FWIW,
the parts at Rock auto are about half what I paid.. bearings are $34 ea and seals $12...

Hard to complain about bearings lasting 41 years tho... ,
