Sence i have this new 71 318 swinger project, i've decided to just keep it SB, so i'll be building up a 360 most likely, i'm wanting to achieve mid. 12s NA or there abouts, i've heard good things about the 360 Magnum roller motors, would a good used one get the job done with the basic bolt-ons/converter/gears? Or would i be better off with the older 360 & just building it from scatch, i'll be useing the 904 trans.

All the factory LA and Magnum heads like to crack...so investing in them is a waste. So if you replace them with new cast iron heads from say EQ, then I would build a magnum engine, use a nice hyd roller comp grind, mildly port the heads and use 1.7 rockers (make sure the grind matches the rocker ratio). Rpm intake, 950HP carb and 9.8:1 compression and it should make 400HP pretty easily.
A nice 3500stall converter and 4.10 gears should net you mid to low 12's with a good slick.

Just say i find a good running magnum engine, what all will i need to do to drop it in, other then intake/carb? Will it bolt up to my 71 904 trans?
Also, what year did the magnum start getting a roller cam?

all Magnum 360 have roller cams..
the LA 360 got roller cams in 1989...but only lasted to 1991..then the magnum came about.

With that car it will not be too tough to achieve mid twelves without using up a budget. Mill the heads to about 60 CC's, leave your stock pistons, porting not needed but will help, (mine wasn't and with 1.88 valves or 2.02, made 0 difference), run a 271 HDP Crower Cam, an LD340 intake and 750 Holley and some nice gears and tires and you are there. If I can do it anyone can.
Doesn't take much to get a early 70's A-body to run mid 12's. Any year magnum 360 will work. Yes a mid 90's mag will work. If you want to use the serpentine belt setup there's some tinkering to be done there to get the newer ps pump to mate with your ps box. Alternatively the old 318/360 front end(timing cover/water pump housing/brackets/70's alternator & ps pump) will all bolt up if you want to keep that old style look with the stock 70's V-belts instead of the serpentine setup.
If you take a 90's mag 360 and do eddy rpm intake, 650 holley carb, recurved or aftermarket dist, cam and headers with some rear gearing and a 3k stall converter I think you should see mid 12's.

1st thing to do is put a breaker bar on the harmonic dampener bolt & see if it turns free. I'm personally leery of engines that have sat outside unused for long periods of time. His price is too high.
I feel the same way, he said he will turn it with a breaker bar for me, he just did it the other day for someone, but for some reason they passed on it.
