Same here - 10w-30 or 5w-20.

For "Racing Motor Oil", click the "Motor Oil" drop-down & "Search".

Going to try Mobil 1 racing 0-20 in 417ci W-8. The profile looks good. Nice Z & P numbers.

Brad Penn 20-50 for me.
I was using redline 10-40 never again rod bearings looked terrible mains were ok. Been building engines for local racers here.
One customer was using Brad Penn 20-50 oil when we torn him down for a freshen up all the bearings look like we just put them in I was
sold on Brad Penn after that.
Used valvoline racing oil in the old days
no issues bearings looked good but that was in the 80’s before the EPA made the oil companies to reduce zinc content.

best so far 8.53 @ 158.59 MPH 60'1.240

I run those lifters, too. That's not good...

How much spring pressure?

So what do you guys think is so special about your oils? I never know what to buy because everyone claims their's is best anyway. I've been using Pennzoil 10w30 or Castrol GTX 10w30. I used to run 15w40 Rotella. And I've used 10w40 Royal Purple, still have half a case in the shop. I can get Mobil 1 10w30 easy enough and thought I'd try that. Never had a problem with any of them.
Pennzoil 10w30 is in my car now though.

Don.

It was a solid lift cam but i think my "advice" on springs was too much as i was running K-Motion 800 springs on a Crane cam 560/580 lift 258/268 with Howard lifters.Just to clear things here I'm not saying one or the other product was to blame! But i ran the VR1 oil as it is recommended for flat tappet push rod engines and now that i have a MP590 cam in there i will be running that oil again.I think the pressure of the springs was too much IMO.Right now i will be running a little less pressure then recommended.Still in shock mode I guess.I don't know who too believe anymore? Never enough spring pressure, too much spring pressure???
Just don't know why it hit #7 intake and everything else was perfect? Not even one full season.

People prefer “special” oils because of what’s formulated into them.

Nothing wrong with Pennzoil 10w30, Castrol GTX 10w30 or Mobil 1 10w30, but they are API (SM) rated oils. SM rated oils are required to have lower zinc and phosphorus levels which is not a problem in newer cars.

If you’re running a older modified V8 with a high performance flat-tappet camshaft, you need motor oil with higher levels of zinc and phosphorus.

Do a search here of the board for zinc and phosphorus (ZDDP).

I'm running a fast ramp Comp solid, 350# open w/double springs. About 1,000 street miles and a little dyno time. So far, so good...

I ripped the oil sample from another member here...

I've found that the filter is more important than the oil. The zinc thing is something to consider these days but head to head, oil is oil. I'm talking a given 10W-40 versus another 10W-40, etc. Not a syn oil against a dino, or any other combinations like that.

I want my fair share

You are right that motor oil filtration is an important factor.

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has known this for a while now.

See also: SAE Oil Filter Testing and Correlation Between Engine Wear.pdf - link

As for motor oil, if we are talking about comparing a non-race off-the-shelf name brand API rated petroleum 10W-40 to another 10W-40, probably not much difference there.

However, motor oil formulators have a vast menu of base oils and additives to consider when formulating a motor oil product. This goes for both conventional petroleum oils as well as synthetic oils. Based on a price to performance ratio, formulators can use inexpensive ingredients or high dollar ingredients to meet their objectives.

This is why some motor oils cost more than others; because motor oil is not created equal.

Retired VP of Marketing at the Hatco Corporation, Tom Schaefer, can explain this better than I can.

Excerpt from fom Schaefer’s article, What’s In Your Oil: Choosing the right components of the right chemistry in the right dosages is a real balancing act, as each of the components have their own pluses and minuses and can interact or compete with each other. Don’t try this at home - leave it to companies you trust who have the technology, R&D, and resources to achieve the necessary balance so critical to performance.

What so great about Brad Penn is it is $3.75 a qt. for 10-30 and 20-50 here, and it is the only oil that my engine builder says to use.

Look at the phosphorus and zinc content in the lab test I posted above and compare it to the other brands.

Not trying to Hi jack. But Brad Penn does really need to get out on the road and pick up some more retailers. Ilive about 60 miles from where's it made and still have to drive 45 miles to find it. Pretty sad they are pretty much unheard of even in their own backyard.

Pennzoil 15W-40 LongLife Gold. It still carries the CJ-4 classifacation (now considered truck stop oil). I found several gallon jugs at Wal-Mart for $10 a gallon.
Nickey Fowler, who runs Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center here in Lubbock, recently told me that even these truck stop oils are going to reduce their zinc & phosporus content, so I may start adding a can of GM's EOS (about $10 per can) at oil change. & I use Wix Racing oil filters.
BTW, We have farm & ranch stores here called Gebo's. They have always carried Mystik lubricants, which used to be produced in Oklahoma by Cato Oil & Refining. According to some comparisons I found on the e-net, their 15W-40 JT-8 is a synthetic blend (?) & carried some of the highest zinc & phosporus content I've found. Then I read Mystik is now owned by CitGo, which is owned by Chavez of Venzula. Bummer, cause Mystik always had a reputation a being a quality oil at a low price.
