This block came back from the machine shop with one ear broke on each side.

Can this block still be used with the stock mounts?

Id really like to not have to run a plate/elephant ears as it will be bear to mount my alt and get pulley alignment, but....

If it matters, I do use a chain on the drivers side to stop torquing.

Opinions?

If it were a Factory big block A body the driver side would not be a concern .

is it the one single ear on the other side ?

If you mean the one single ear broke, yes. One ear on both sides is broke.

Thanks for the offer. If I go that route I'll hit you up for the pics.

Any opinion on the ears?

I use elephant ears and haven't had a problem, if you look in the tech section on BBD, It shows you how to make and fit them.

easy fix, done this before. you get a special arc welding rod that welds to cast iron. wind the amps up & get your mate to keep the weld area hot with the oxy acetylene or similar. you just build up a big blob that you grind into shape, redrill the hole & bobs your uncle it's fixed! a coat of paint & no one will know. i assisted a dirt track racer to do this exact repair, it's pretty strong!

Call the shop and tell them to find the broken piece. They broke it, atleast they can find it. With this piece, it can be welded with a Ni rod, or stainless rod...
IMO
I wouldnt sweat it.You have the other two bolts to hold the engine. All of them on the other side, use the torque strap, and forget it.

why redrill it, when you can put a piece off copper in it, weld around it, pull the copper out and there will be a hole there?

exactly! I would be more upset with the machine shop, and make them fix it, and then re-check everything for square!

if THEY broke the ears off, then THEY need to fix it, and adding that much heat to the block, you might distort cylinder bores or something, so THEY should check everything to make sure it hasn't moved

but, bottom line, yes it can be fixed and use your stock motor mounts. I saw bob george's work fixing some blocks for his customers, and holy crap! I used to think a window in the side of the block meant it was junk, but not anymore!

We have a small block with the ears on the torque side and we have it in a 65 belvy with no issues, it came out of a dirt car, and got hammered pretty hard on the drivers front. Hasnt hurt anything yet, we just have a strap on it.

Well the ears were broke off 2 years ago when this block was machined. The guy who did the machine work is a good enough machinist, but a clown. Took about 6 months or more to get the block from him, finally got it home and didnt notice the ears were gone a few months down the line. Before I figured out he was a clown I took him the 440 block that is in my car at the moment. I paid to have the cam bearing journals corrected. (Journals too small from the factory, cam fit WAY too tight.) When I picked the block up he had scraped the bearings to fit my cam. No biggie, but I paid to have the block corrected. He also tried to charge me an extra 150 for a line hone. No dice, didnt ask for it, block didnt need it. Didnt pay for it and wont ever pay for it. Short verstion of the story, I never had a chance to get the ears back.

Like said above, no way I'll braze or weld on the block now. Warped cylinders dont appeal to me.

Just for giggles I think I'll fashion something and epoxy it. Maybe a thin bushing, epoxy it to the block, etc. Yeah, I know its a waste, but I want to see if the epoxy will adhere to the block and stay adhered.

build it up with JB weld - might take a couple of tubes by looking at the pix. I built up a mounting boss on my Jeep 4.0 and have run it 4 years on the strip with no prob;ems. You might drill and tap the mt and put a 1/4 20 bolt in to wrap the JB around - Make a form with tape and cardboard, then add the JB

Don't waste your time and just put a plate on.I mounted my alternator on the power steering ear on the water pump and also ended up with a shorter alternator belt too
