having trouble finding the reason why my horn will not shut off, I have a new relay, new engine harness, a grant gt wheel, installed a new cancel cam in the column a last summer, This problem just started this summer. I already suffered a meltdown a few weeks ago where it fried the horn wires to the horns and ruined the engine harness and relay, I replaced all the parts and it still honks. Rightnow I am currently driving it with the relay and horns unplugged. any ideas?

Short in the column. Probably in the Grant button area.

Unplug the connector to the column. If the horn stops the problem is somewhere in the column or horn button area. If it still sounds you have a problem somewhere in the rest of the system.

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

I am not sure that proves it is in the column. when you unplug the column, you pull power to everything down stream too don't you?

The horn wire is in the turn signal switch harness. Just unplug the turn signal switch. If the horn stops making noise, the problem is either with the turn signal switch, horn switch or slip ring.

Nope, the horn wire is the ground for the circuit, which is why you need the relay as the horns are always grounded and there is always 12v at the relay.

Oh, and the Grant adapters are low quality and most likely the problem.

to all that are replying thank you very much, I just unplugged the turn signal switch and the horns dont go off anymore. It must be the turn signal switch or the grant adaptor. It shouldnt be the horn button because its new. I had the wheel on the car for about 4 years now without trouble but took it apart last summer and replaced the switch/cancel cam.

Some of those aftermarket wheels are just notorious. Should not take you long, just pull the button/ wheel/ etc apart piece by piece. At some point you should get down to the pigtail that comes up out of the column. You should be able to pull that loose from the adapter junk, and determine if that "splits" the problem. You should be able to gently pull and wiggle the wire around with "no horn" or ground the end to the column nut and "get horn."

In my lifetime I've had at least 4 "custom" wheels and the horn buttons never were satisfactory on any of 'em.

There are three parts to the horn circuitry in the steering column.

Turn signal switch that has a post or roller assembly that rides on the slip ring.

The slip ring that transfer the ground from the horn switch to the turn signal switch.

Horn switch that supplies the ground to the horn relay through the slip ring to the turn signal switch.

The slip ring is insulated from the column and only sees a ground from the horn switch. Sometime the insulation on the slip ring breaks down and then the ring gets it ground directly from the steering column. When that happens, the horn either blows continuously or whenever the wheel is turned.

Your best bet is to hook up the turn signal wiring and then disconnect the horn switch. If the horn shuts off, you have found your problem.

If the horns still makes noise, it is probably the slip ring.
