Quick background:
My dad wants to order a camshaft for his 1972 Dart. It has a noe stock 360 that we pulled out of a 1974 (I think it was) low mileage (~43,XXX) Dodge Truck and it runs great.
He has his small B&M 177(?)supercharger on it but wants to add a bit more camshaft.
When we swap the camshaft we will get the correct valve springs and add a double row true roller timing chain.

My Question:
What is the "largest" camshaft we could put in there and have it still use the stock torque converter?

Useless babble:
I was kind of hoping to use a fast rate ~.485"(I)/495"(E) lift camshaft with 112/114 lobe seperation.
We've used this cam in a couple other supercharged 360s and had good luck with them, but this is our first automatic transmission vehicle and I don't know if that cam will like the factory converter.

The .484" lift came?

I don't know if I'd trust a cheap converter.
I've heard so many bad stories about them.
Besides he isn't going to spend money on one anyways.
You don't understand how cheap he is.
$250.00 is a lot of money to him.

Been running a Daaco or something like that for 7 years in my 6000lb van.

Helps motivate that tank.

You post the lift and lsa of the cam in question. Those don't mean anything. A stock converter likes very short duration,250-270 degrees intake duration is fine. Yes you can run more duration, but it won't be optimal with a stock converter.Make sure you use the proper valve spring for the cam and more seat pressure on the intake spring is a good idea.

I have no idea at what RPMs the idle is set at. The current car we have the other supercharged 360 in is a 1941 Dodge sedan (2-door). It is a shell of a car with no interior and open exhaust.
There is no tach in the car.
It seems pretty mild actually, at least to me.

I'll check out those generic converters a little more, however all of our cars have A-883 4-speeds in them.

go with more lift and try not to increase duration & overlap I kno thats nearly impossible but I dont think your gonna have a converter problem if you two can tune your carb.
What is the intended use for this shell

Oh and it,s not gonna idle rough like a top fueler if its running right, well maybe if you go waaay overboard on the cam.

The '41 Dodge was put together for having fun in the parking lot and at the strip now and then. Unfortunately our building burnt down so we lost our 330-foot lanch pad (with a nice shut down area)

Well that supercharger should add bottom end so it shouldn't be as sensitive to adding a little cam duration.

What cam is in there now? Didn't the 4bbl 360's get the 340 cam from the factory?

I have no idea, the engine is bone stock right now
(with the exception of the supercharger intake manifold, supercharger, and Holley 4-bbl. carburetor).
The engine was originally a 2-bbl. I believe, which is weird on a truck, isn't it?

My 79 van was a 2bbl 360. Gas sucking pig! No 340HP cams in the trucks. Except the Lil Reds.

I might have a "how to pick your forced induction cam" info somewhere. gotta check my saved emails. I would look at alky/water injection with any huffer.

Lemme go see!
