Depending on how much you push the RPM with your Hemi, they like a little room for wiggle,.....I myself would start off with 0 lash, meaning, lash the engine according to the chart, tighten the adjuster till the pushrod no longer spins freely in your finger, has just a remote feel of drag on it......if the engine still sounds "loose", 0 lash, then 1/2 turn, remember the Hemi, hyd or not, has it's own unique valvetrain clack

most adjusters only needed 1/2 to 1 turns, #8 cylinder which is where the noise seemed to be took about 5 or 6 turns, adjuster is now just below locknut, where others are 3/16 above. will this be ok? can I put plugs in and start without VC on for a minute or will this throw oil everywhere? makes me nervous why this one is so different. bad lifter, wiped cam? Not trying to be a pessimist, just sick of throwing money at this engine. Edit: threw it back together, everything sounds quiet, noise is gone. only concern now is that one adjuster that is so far down and why. Thanks Greg

What is important is that only one or two threads are showing below the rocker. If this is not the case the ball of the adjuster/push rod cup will not get lubed properly. I'm running the same lifters with 1/2 turn pre-load and still hear the valve train tick slightly. Hemi rocker gear is noisy and the big sheet metal valve covers act like megaphones, amplifying the noise.

IF I can get old lifter out I will be able to get a look at the lobe. Somewhere I've lost about 1/4 inch in length of lifter, pushrod and cam (off lobe), best I can hope for is lifter. This is the 2nd round of problems. 1st time @ 200 miles 3 pistons seized to bore of brand new block, Builder blamed dyno guy for engine too lean, Quoted $4500 to bore .030 and rebuild again, settled at $2200 after he read moparts post and opinions about it. Both times he did start up and break in at his shop. Called today and talked to his partner who's 1st comment was "we'd need to get paid to work on it at all. No warranty, if part fails after 3 minutes, mfg will do nothing" After he talked to builder he called me back and agreed to send me a lifter. After spending 12K there, would've expected a little more courtesy and customer service.

The pushrod ball is still on the end of the adjuster right?
Sheldon
yes it is. Rear main is leaking too, probably best to take it to a shop that can diagnose it and do whatever it takes to fix it. I've got a couple good referrals here in Michigan but looking for suggestions if anyone has any. I'll stick to what I do and write the check (again).

To many BS problems with your engine, sounds like the shop has no idea what they are doing. Don't allow yourself to be finacially drained by these individuals. 3 pistons seize afterward and engine builder blames it on lean condition on dyno, are you kidding me. Then they require you to pay again, this says alot about the people your dealing with get away from them. They don't have a clue what there doing.

Just a shot in the dark here, but does this engine have lash caps. I've seen cases where they fell out for whatever reason, this will cause the gap to grow.
If you lost a quarter inch without lash caps, than either the plunger is stuck down (long shot)or I'm sorry to say in my opinion the lobe has worn down. Replacing the lifter will not fix this. How was the break in done? Did they use an addidtive plus a good break in oil?
You might be able to get the lifter out without pulling the intake, but it will be a juggling act trying to maneuver the lifter with pliers to the space between the ports.
Intake is pretty easy to pull (I should know, I've done it a hundred times last year chasing what I thought was leak). This way you can have a really good look at whats going on with the cam and lifters.
Hope this turns out to be something small.

Managed to swap lifter without pulling intake, warmed up, adjusted lash, now I'm back where the other adjusters are, noise is gone. Life is good other than the rear main seal leak. Its a 2 pc seal, hopefully can fix it pulling the pan and not the crank too. I am going to get an oil anlysis done just for grins to check on things. Thanks for all the advice. Greg
Some good news for a change! Glad it was something small.

Can you post a picture of the bottom of the old lifter?
Snoopy it looks brand new, I think the failure was internal as in not pumping up. I'm computer challenged, about all I can do is type. Visibly it still looked perfect.
