The wife was driving our 2004 Durango last February when the engine decided to go out with a bang. I had just put a fresh set of heads on it with new valve seats installed to be proactive with the common valve seat issue. I can't find an obvious reason why it broke a connecting rod. No obvious valve contact or hydraulic lock up. The heads look fine. I picked up a low mileage (80k) 2008 5.7 to replace it. It's definitely no fun doing it since the recommended way is to lift the body off the frame to replace the engine. Since I have a four post lift and not a two post, that ain't happening. Thanks, but I already have a 2008 complete low mileage engine that I bought from a buddy. Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol

Those early durangos had a cowl design that allowed rain water to drip on the engine and it would go in the cylinders thru worn out intake O rings, start the engine after sitting in the rain and BAM! Busted connecting rod exactly like you have pictured right there. This issue got them a reputation as having bad rods but no engine can take a hydo lock. There was a recall or TSB to update the cowling so it would not drip there. Also I would do intake O rings on them as an extra precaution if I had one every 100,000 miles. The engine is much easier to replace just by pulling the fender liners and intake. Removing the body from the frame is a waste of time and effort. I am not causing global warming, I am just trying to hold off a impending Ice Age!

The o-rings were new, I had just replaced the cylinder heads after have an extra pair redone with new valve seats. After the new heads were installed I was chasing a random misfire. Once I replaced the coils it ran fine, for two weeks. When the rod spit out it hadn't been raining. It had been running for hours, about 10 minutes into the 25 minutes trip home from her moms it went bang, so it wasn't on a start up after rain. Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol
