65 wheel many cracks and 1/4” wide openings, what do y’all use to repair them? Epoxy, glass resin?

I epoxied the wheel.on my 64 racecar. Sanded and primed . Painted with single stage urethane. It was beat up pretty good. 13 years later there are only a few small hairline cracks. But barely noticeable.

Also saw another video where the guy used 2 part 3M panel bonding adhesive on a 68 Mustang steering wheel that was a disaster to start with. Only drawbacks there is the cost, and you have to have the applicator gun to use it.

I was shocked to see the guy in the video did not sand, clean or prep the wheel and cracks before starting. Adhesives 101A first chapter. twocents eek beer

JB Weld works great. Fill it, sand it, prime and paint. For the gap you can make a mold from a good part of the wheel with clay or latex. Then apply over the gap and fill with JB.

Yes! prep is key to making it last. All the old cracks will likely be full of dirt, oils, and schmutz from your hands--use a dremel to grind the cracks so you are certain to be down to clean, solid, plastic.

PC-7 epoxy is what Eastwood sells in their kits.

You can get it at the hardware store much cheaper.

I did mine about 10 years ago and despite the extreme temps here in Kansas, it's holding up nicely.

I wish I had before pics because it was REALLY bad and missing large pieces. I used an angle grinder and dremel tool to get to clean metal and plastic.

One key to painting is bolt it to the engine stand so you can rotate it!

I have resorted/repaired a couple of steering wheels using https://www.eastwood.com/master-steering-wheel-repair-kit-w-instruc.html

All have held up well. Time, patience, cleaning and prep are the keys to success.

You can do it.

Thanks for tips, my plan is to cut off all the plastic in marked sections off the metal rim (rusty underneath) once clean I’ll epoxy each back on filling in the gaps. Finding the off blue paint will be the hardest imo
