on the edge of the pads there should be a letter code. this code tells what the pads characteristics are, and how the pads will react under braking situations. did you bed the pads in ? believe it or not, that bedding process has a lot to do with brake performance, even with stock type/parts store replacements.

I've always used the cheapest ones from a parts store that I could get. One of my bigger cars squeals even with decent pads so it has ceramic ones.
The only time I've ever had a problem stopping is when there's contamination on them. Pretty much what I have always done , except recently when buying at the az or similar they will ask what grade , and I usually go in the middle. Thanks

My 65 I bought ceramic pads from Advanced years ago.They work plain and simple.No dust on my mags either.Even at 120 at the strip they stop and dont fade.IIRC they were bendix.

My friend says to always buy the pads with the least warranty. Feels that to make them last longer they put too much metallic into the pad material and that minimizes the initial braking and will most likely squeal down the road. Hey it could be true. Those would be organic pads, lol. They under perform semi-metallic pads in regards to braking performance. They are quieter and they might not chew up rotors as much, but they don't stop as well. One issue with modern, undersized, brakes is that if you go from OEM semi metallic to organics you will really notice the difference.

Hi all 65 b body with 11” a body disc set up . Converted this to discs many years ago following Ebergs discotech article. Great improvement no issues. Last season put a new set of brake pads on it. Didn’t really need it but had it apart for wheel bearings and I had the pads on the shelf for many years so put them on. Everything seamed ok , but, one day wasn’t paying attention and rolled through a stop sign . The car stopped but not very quickly. Previously this car would stop on the proverbial Dime.
I’m thinking the pads are either too old or maybe not the right type ? That said I don’t remember what they are other than parts store maybe semi metallics ?
Anyone have anything they like? What did you do to the rotors before swapping pads ?

even if they looked good, there will be pad material transferred to the rotor, and the previous material may be playing havoc with the material of the new pads, thus brake performance will suffer. the 80 grit on a da would be a good first step. you have nothing to loose by trying that. just don't dig any divots in the surfaces doing that. 80 grit can cut faster than one thinks, and iron rotors aren't that tough to start with, material removal wise.

Dumb question, but did you handle the rotors with dirty hands while doing the bearings? I have seen people do brake work in a hurry, and then forget to make sure the contact surfaces are 100% free of oily handprints. The pads I would have given a quick spray with brake cleaner also in case they had some contamination on them.
Some of the O'reilly stores here still do rotor and drum surfacing also.
