What else is being done before machining?

Is there a particular block you are asking about? Depending on the era and maker some were reported as wash and assemble after a final hone of course.

Not much to do. Not much flash. Probably some machine work.

The KB block we got in 2009 was almost ready to go as delivered, washed down, oil galleys flushed out, dried and assembled. As cast it was of a very good quality.

Assembling a motor is like brain surgery, it is absolutely Freaking impossible to keep it to clean work wrench work

Thanks gents coffee....coming from a stock block prep, wasn't sure if any of the procedures that they perform on stock blocks need on the aftermarket aluminum block.

If anything, i believe you will be ahead of the game to thoroughly check and clean any aftermarket block just as we do to a stock block. It is preventing any chances of contamination….i guarantee that I can find some grit, shavings, etc in any block if thoroughly checked. There are just too many spots/ crevices for something to remain.
I found some very small amounts of material in an Indy maxx block a few years ago and will check a mega block from ‘06 just as thoroughly when the time comes.

The INdy is not date stamped but they do have serial numbers that you can call Indy to get more info. Or just send me an email and I will get you a copy of the original order. On the indy blocks, take a boroscope or bright light and go up the main oil feed holes to where it intersects the main galley. Make sure that intersection is fully drilled and free of slag and crud. I also enlarge the oil drain holes on the top of the cam tunnel about double what they come at. I also drill a small hole in the China wall in the front of the block to allow oil to go down the front of the block. Other wise all it gets is splashed off the crank up there. Important for gear drives and timing chains both. Wash, wash and wash it again......Todd

That picture actually shows it very well. Both the hole in the China wall and the enlargement of the drain holes compared to the first one shown. Tig you can butt in anytime. The only way oil can drain for these places is through those holes. You would be shocked to see how much oil is in there when it is running.
