Hello. I have the 99 Dodge Ram 2500 v10 in the Sport edition. Last nite I messed up my back bumper beyond repair. My question is: Will the back bumper fit on my truck from any 2nd gen ram truck or does it have to be the Sport model? I know the plastic front bumper is unique to the Sport edition and not the other trucks. So I was hoping the rear bumper would fit from any 2nd gen ram truck. Fingers crossed someone can help me with this. Thanks

Yes any bumper will work

The main difference is that the rear bumper on a Sport is painted body color rather than black or chrome.

I certainly like the 2nd Gen Ram design’s many innovations, but the rear bumper does not impress me.

I see so many rear bumpers rusted out,
and in the mild rear end collision I suffered in 2004 and the others I have seen the rear bumper seems kinda “window dressing” like and cannot withstand even the mildest tap.

I am old enough to remember the “5 mph bumper” era and the wide range of good and bad designs back then.

I see those “tall boy” beer and energy drink cans and wonder about a custom rear bumper with those to absorb shock.
Maybe empty such cans and refill with expanding urethane foam.

A horizontal “whirlwind” forms behind the tailgate at highway speed and it is possible that a “half pipe” bumper of some sort could improve fuel economy.

The weird “side triangles” of GM Avalanches behind and on the sides of the rear cab window are designed to stabilize the horizontal whirlwind that forms behind the cab and at the front of the cargo box. Early Honda Ridgelines did similar.

I can't speak for GM but Honda's "sail panel" was to support the unibody that they since engineered out.

As for the OP there are plenty o aftermarket bumpers for GEN II.

Don't like the bumper use a roll pan.

Roll pan won't help if you get hit or back into something.

And the 2nd gen years run from 1994 thru AND INCLUDE model year 2002. Is that correct? A 2003 bumper would not fit?

weld up a chunk of 4" water pipe to your stock brackets for a "slightly" better rear bumper.

New bumper from Rock Auto is pretty cheap, chrome ones anyway.

I would rather find a good used one than buy aftermarket. Thats why I'm trying to pinpoint the year that Gen 2 ram trucks ended. From what I have read, Gen 2 ended with model year 2002, is that correct?

1500's no, ended 2001, 2500's and 3500's ended in 2002

Many mining operations use high density polyethylene pipe to pump mixtures of rock and water.

Our 16” OD 1.5 wall HDPE pipe would wear out after four years.
The outside wall of the pipe would be scratched up too, as bulldozers would push or drag them.
We could give the old worn pipes away to county road departments for under road drains.

I never thought about using HDPE pipe as a truck bumper.
You could even slip a smaller OD pipe inside.

The Phosphate mines of Florida, and the “china clay” TiO2 mines of Georgia also use such HDPE pipe.

Dirt gets trapped between the inner support and the bumper. That is why you see so many rusted ones.

Exactly 1500s ended in 2001, 2500 & 3500 ended in 2002 (I still have my 2002 2500 Cummins - yay!! . . . )

I still have my 96 V10 4x4. 2nd owner since 98 and has been flawless. Never let me down and everything still works. However, Michigan winters are killing the body.

I'm fortunate to live in a rust-free state. My 99 Ram 2500 has zero rust. It has been an Arizona truck 99% of its live. It spent a year or so in Colorado. Otherwise, its been in Arizona. I used to live in the rustbelt and I know what salty roads does to the vehicles. BTW..............nice truck a12rag
