So I came across a Dana 60 for an e-body and looking to put it into my 1971 Charger. I wanted to run a slightly narrow rearend so I could put bigger wheels in the back. I figure I could remove the stock mounts, add Cass’s (Dr Diff) rear spring relocation kit and make some decent tire space in there. The e-body is about 2in narrower than the -b-body, so I’m sure I can get some big tires under the back. Hope to try for 12in instead of just smashing a 10in wheel back there. Just wondering if someone has done this and if so, how big of a wheel, tires were you able to fit?

Yes that works but you would probably be money ahead to sell the E body Dana to a collector and then buy a Strange S60 that is the correct width for your wheels and tire combination.

I went the other way, put a B body dana in a E body. I was thinking the E body diff was wider than a B by about 2"? Anyway, with moving the springs some, I got a 10" wheel in there.

You are correct, the E-body rear is wider than B-body rear. I did the same as you.


'86 Maple Grove KOS Mopar low qualifier......true street legal with no power adders.

NOS-used when losing since 1940.

According to the info below the E body axle is only just over 1 1/4" narrower than the '71 and newer B body one. If you could find a pre '71 B body axle you would be almost 3" narrower.

The posters car is a 71 Charger. They are wider than an E body. The E body is wider than a pre 71 B body.

The 70-71 B body dana is longer than an ebody and are rare. Less than 500 made. Only came in 440-6 and hemi 4-speed cars. My 70 Cuda had 1 in it when I bought it so I sold it to a member here that needed it for his hemi car and replaced it with a S-60.


If you you're going to go through the trouble of relocating the springs I'd sell the e-body and go with a pre 70 B-body Dana which is shorter and cheaper.

You could get dana 60 in 1970/72 440-4bbl cars too. The reason I was asking about this dana was that it was available and would be cheaper by $1100. It's aftermarket with race axles and ready to go. I was under the assumption the 1971 b-body rears were wider than the e-body rears. Was I wrong?

it's a Strange 60 built for a customers 1971cuda.

Do you know how wide it is? Don't assume that it was made to stock width unless you've measured it.

Strange S60 Complete. I Strange ever made a bad rearend, that would be, well strange. It was left over from a project build.

The wheel/tire width will be limited by how much room you have.

Narrower/wider rear end won't help you in that respect. Would just change the offset. (to center whatever wheel/tire combo will fit)

Thank you, that's what I was originally thinking, but wanted to confirm. Thinking the Dr DIff )Cass) inboard kit would work nicely with this rear.

That shows all 62-70 B body 8-3/4 rears as the same width. Aren't 65-67 narrower? shruggy

This will make ya think. One one rig I run a S60 wider then a 72 B body and adjusted the rim offset and its many times more stable feeling then a narrow rear with the same width rims.

No you're right the 71 is longer than an ebody. Hope this chart helps some of the dates aren't 100% right but it does show the longer tubes on a 71. 603222

i'm almost positive the 65-66 rears are an inch or so narrower than the 68-70 rears.
i know for a fact the 66 rear i installed in my 64 belvedere post car was an inch plus narrower on each side than the original keyed axle rear was. also, i believe the 64 rear is wider than the 62/63 rears, but i don't know by how much.
that chart has been around for years, and has been complained about being wrong for as many years as it has been out there.
