I plan on painting my Coronet A4 Silver. My paint guy tells me that when you paint an older color base coat clear coat, it doesnt look exactly the same as original?
Is there any color anyone has used to get close to A4? Or does anyone have any advice/tips for paint?

Thanks!!

Use PPG and tell your painter to do the job. It will look fantastic if he knows how to shoot.

PPG has the orginal formulas, Sikkens is just trying to get close.

If I could get my hands on a printout of the ppg formula, my local Matrix distributor shouldn't have a problem duplicating it

Only if your paint distributor uses exactly the same coding as PPG for the stuff they can mix. Matrix does that, Dupont does not and is totally different, and I don't know about any other brands.

I use Sikkens and it is really good stuff. My car is A4 too and I'm going to use either PPG or Sikkens but I'm not going to try to match the original because I think it's way too green. I want mine more silver. I already sprayed the quarter scoops with PPG and they look great-colorwise. Good luck on your car!

Here is what a friend of mine got into with his car that was T5 bronze metallic, 69 1/2 6 bbl car. Painter did not use PPG said he could match the color perfect. Took a scan of the door pilar of the original paint. When he got the car it was the wrong color. Here is a picture of the car.

Then after $6000 and 6 months of him being totally disgusted and not touching the car because of the color, I told him I would help him sand the car and I would reshoot it with the correct color from PPG.
Now the car is correct. See any difference. You really only get one chance to get the paint right, don't let anything keep you from making the correct decision about the paint. (Unless you have a really generous friend who is willing to spend hour and hours, plus the cost of new paint plus the buffing and color sanding for $1000 labor plus materials and an aditional month.)

Wow....Thats the last thing I want is to have the car get done and I dont like the color.
Thanks for everyone chiming in here!!
So....is there anyone out there who can let me know if there is a code/mixture for A4 using Sikkens?? This is the paint he has at his shop, and will mix only what he needs. If I need to, I WILL get a different brand to make sure the car looks good.
I might want to paint it F8 also.....Im so confused....

Have him mix a small batch & squirt a test panel...
large enough to get a good look at it; an old fender or similar is ideal.

And yes, A4 looks like light green metallic in the right lighting.

I thought the same as you on the green tint, but when the car was done it looked awesome.

Well for whatever reason it seems my post disappeared. I don't have the energy to write it all again so: Yes, have your painter do a sample 1st.

Thank you wkroncke17. I used PPG to the original specs. FYI this is a compete numbers match, 4 speed, air grabber, with white interior

So it sounds like Sikkens paint codes arent good....
Moparmike, I'm about to haul it to you and have you do it in T5!!!....That looks great!!

TripleX, I really like your A4. Is it a Base coat/Clear coat?

The reason Im asking about Sikkens so much is - thats the paint he uses. He only charges for how much he uses. It will save me $$$....But, if it turns out not looking the way it should be, then it will be worth the extra $$ spent on PPG.
This is my first resto....I want it to look good.
I sure do appreciate everyone who has chimed in.

Wally.

The paint isn't a very big expense compared to the other costs forming the total cost of a paint job. heck, I just bought another gallon of F8 Base because all they sell after May 1st is the water based stuff and I wanted to have some just in case.

Just got some EL5 Butterscotch mixed up in a spray can for my 71 Charger (original color) and the local Sikkens dealer (Werner-Nielson in New London, Ct) didn't have a match to the original code numbers I gave them so the "Got it as close as they could".

It looks more "Musturdy" than Butterscotch.

Sorry to Hijack your thread, but the advice i'm seeing here seems to be go with a PPG brand of paint if I want to be absolutely correct.

I've seen some crappy, dull EL5's, unlike the awesome look of Bigblock340's duster in the desert sun.

This (Pic) is what i'm after, much nicer than even the original paint I see under the carpet:
