I have a big block MOPAR 493 engine used for bracket racing.
The runs are mostly 1/8th mile now days and I'm shifting at 6400 rpm.
How many runs before the Comp Cams 829-16 roller lifters need to be rebuilt?
Has anyone gotten their lifters rebuilt by Comp recently?
If not is there a shop where you can send them to for rebuilding?
Thanks in advance for your input.
MJ

I don't think comp rebuilds them anymore. I have run the small block version of that lifter and have had good luck. I put a few thousand miles each on a couple of sets and never had a problem. I had to move away from them for my current R1 block engine.

If they thumb good I just keep running then. Had to upgrade Ka-Blue-E, but only because rpm went up

Comp doesn’t offer the rebuild service any longer.

How many passes on them now? What spring pressures? More spring pressure, higher RPM, less passes you get before it eats a roller and makes a mess.

I got away from the needle bearing 829s several years ago when I got over 700 lbs open spring pressure.

Comp makes the bushed 829s now and that is what I use.

3rd year and 500+ passes on this set.

moparacer,
There are 250 1/8th mile passes on the car now.
I don't see a spring pressure number in the build sheet.

Are you saying if you order a set of 829-16 lifters from Comp they will now be the bushed style?
Thanks!

No you can order them that way. They still make them with the needle bearings.

You probably still have some life left in them with your setup being lower RPM, but I can tell you I couldn't get much more than that out of mine before the problems started.

The “829’s” are not available bushed.

The bushed lifters are from the Sportsman series.
The bushed version is 96829B-16

So I took a look at Comps website.
The 829-16 lifters that I have been running are now $628.95.
The 96829B-16 are $1,195.95 so I would sure hope they would last longer.

I am going to contact johncalliesinc and see if they will rebuild my 829-16 lifters and go from there.
Thanks for all the replies and information!

You might consider switching brands. I'm in the process of building a 521 inch Ford drag race engine and we bought solid roller lifters from Jon Kaase. He has them custom built to his specs by Morel. They cost $575 a set and he says they work just fine on his 800 hp engines. I tend to trust Kaase but I guess we'll find out.

Holy cow, they weren't that expensive when I bought them.

But I can attest to the fact that a chewed up roller lifter, metal thrown behind the piston skirts, and a ruined cam isn't cheap either.

What spring pressures?
What max RPM ? (shift or finish line).

I run the Comp Cams 892 series lifter (pushrod oiling, tall) 892C, 892R, 892L (offset seats).
In 2021 they were $42 each, now they are $69 each. That is +64% and they don't come with link bars, those are extra for whatever engine you run.
Inflation is bad enough, but that is crazy price growth in just 2 years.

Yes, Comp Cams as well as Holley have been very aggressive with their price hikes. Holley has been raising prices every quarter for most parts.

Just got these last Monday and had them 6 days after order shipped across the country

800 over the nose on the intake side Jim. Less on the exhaust. I was shifting at 6900 and was 72 7300 in the traps in good air when I had 4:88s in it.

Today with 4:56s and bad air it was 6900 6900.

So I have checked with johncalliesinc about roller lifter rebuilding.
They don't answer questions direct and refer you to their dealer list.
So I contacted the closest dealer to me Howards Cams.
The tech guy there got back with me right away.
He informed me that the only roller lifters they rebuild is the house brand MOREL!

So I am still looking for a rebuilder for the Comps and also thinking of switching brands for one that can be rebuilt.
Do the BAM lifters offer a rebuilding service?
Thanks!

That’s the difference between some guys and how I do things. It says right on their website that they build other lifters. I would call back and ask again if that’s false advertising or the truth. I would also call several dealers and ask. I don’t give up easily as there are lots of idiots manning the phones.

So I took the suggestion and contacted another Morel dealer.
This time it was Motorsports Unlimited from Brook Park, Ohio.
I sent my question to the contact info provided and have not heard back in over 3 days?
I hope the tech guy is on vacation and maybe hear something next week?

FWIW...MOST of the parts companies email tech line isn't worth the time to type it up from my experience. Just call em.
Having said that, Isky & Bullet have been good about emailing. twocents

Hate to bump an old thread, but did you happen to find anyone to rebuild comp lifters moparjohn?

Anyone else?

I have a bushed set of Comp 96829s and a regular set I would like to have done.

I understand that feeling... I find that LS Jr is annoying and comes across almost like a car salesman in his videos.
