Looking for input. 71 FJ6 Sassy Grass. My plan is to use single stage for underneath, trunk, and engine compartment, and BCCC for the exterior, including the door jambs. I believe I had read this is typically the strategy when you do BCCC for the exterior, but I'm not an expert so I figured I'd check here first. I already have all the product, but if I need to switch my plan now is the time.

Anyone have experience with this color with this situation?

Since you haven't done it yet why not paint the under side to simulate how it actually came from the factory , primer color then overspray ?

running up my post count some more .

Haven't done that color, but your process is pretty much what we have always used. Touching up the single stage is much easier than base/clear. Are you planning on painting the bottom in primer gray or body color?

Master, again and still

I considered this route but ultimately decided I like the look of the painted underneath. The car will have some intentional aspects of OE, but I didn't want to recreate anything that I felt was a byproduct of mass production.

Ok great, thanks for the feedback. I feel like everything I read before buying paint said to go BCCC for exterior. After I bought the paint I feel like everything said to do single stage haha, hopefully it just turns out respectable.

That's the combo my car (71 Challenger GA4) was done in 30 years ago. Worked well.
Only difference was we did the jams in single stage too.

More than one way to skin a cat. I would talk to your painter about what he is comfortable with. The more metallics or pearls are in the paint, the harder it will be to get paint to match between single stage and base/clear.

So let's say you shoot the underside in single stage. There are a lot of nooks and crannies - places to potentially miss. If you don't catch them right away, blowing them in afterwards will leave overspray which you then have to sand and buff and "hopefully" have it blend in.

Now let's say you shoot the underside in B/C. You shoot the base and any missed spots are just blown in - no blending issues. Now you clearcoat it. If you do happen to miss any spots, blending the clearcoat is less labor intensive than blending a single stage - particularly if the color is a metallic. Furthermore, color match to the top side is perfect.

Is this all to save a couple bucks? Not worth it !!

Where did you do the cross over...under the weather strip or at the doors edge?

Painter is me, and this will be my first paint job...paint is non metallic.

You may want to spray a test panel of both the bccc and the single stage and see if they are to your liking. You may want to paint the engine compartment bccc also.

At the doors.

GA4 is a metallic and my painter had no issues in using the 2 different types of paint. It was all done based on his recommendations and experience.
It was all PPG product and it was a long time ago. I know the technology and environental requirements of auto paint have changed formulations considerably since then.

I tried getting some single stage paint to match the BC/CC but it was too dark and didn't look right. Ended up doing dark grey BC with matte or satin CC.
