I happened to see a 440 block for sale on craigslist and the block stamping numbers are all over the place. Is that normal? I've got a 68 440 block and the HP is stamped crooked and I've always wondered if it was legit.

Looks like it’s a Jan ‘68 casting block with a Feb, assy date for a 1969 model year. Little strange with the timing of that.
No idea what’s up with the 877 stamping.

Also strange that a ‘68 casting block would have the horizontal block reinforcement that came out for ‘69 blocks.

That looks like a 69 casting date to me .

All the other markings look good good to me except that 877 , not sure what's up with that , the circular marks appear to be factory machining .

The HP stamp being sideways is not surprising as it's a separate stamp used to make it .

running up my post count some more .

That is a January 69 casting, the 9 sometimes looks like an 8. Looks good to me, except of course for the extra numbers...

The funny thing about science is that if you change one miniscule parameter you change the entire outcome to the way you want it.

What’s the A back in the china wall for? Looks like an upside down one out on the pad too.

I want my fair share

Could "877" be the first number on the second row from the top on a Lynch Road fender tag that identifies the engine (like on an A12 tag of 925, 926 ) or on this tag for a '69 383 Super Bee of 899??

Anyone ever see a fender tag (or broadcast sheet) with an 877 engine code?

The E440 stamp is the worst one I've ever seen.

I still think it’s strange that it’s stamped for 1969 model year “E” for a jan ‘68 casting block. To me, that means Feb, 3, 1969 assy date. Weird.

In that case, you are correct and it would be normal. Looking at it again, i think you are right. Thx for pointing that out.

It looks like 1 - 15 - 69 casting date to me. Just a "dirty" 9 IMO

It wouldn't be the first time something like that happened. You mentioned earlier not seeing a 68 casting with the 69 rib , why???, because it's not a 68 casting .

I've never seen a Broadcast sheet engine code stamped on the ID pad .

One thing to note the engine is not painted the correct color for a 69 HP build , the 877 might be a number stamped by the shop that rebuilt it ?

I owned that block years ago. Sold it to a guy in the Bronx NY. It was a Jan 69 cast block with a Feb build date. I didnt know what the other numbers were, I assumed a number from a machine shop. From what I remember it was NOT from a B Body. Jefferson plant I think, but that was a while ago so ???
