Snowing in the north!
Can someone either point me to a great shop that can
recurve my distributor in the Minneapoiis area
or send me a link on how to limit total on the one
I currently have please? My car runs awesome at
18 before, but that puts me into the 40's total
and I go knock, knock, knock. Not good for engine
life!

Do a search on here going back about a year, I can't remember who it was that posted but there is a chart that shows how long the slots need to be for the desired mechanical advance... Great thread with pics and all.

Can you take out the center clip & dissassemble it to weld/shorten the slots and if you have a spare dist w good bushings you could prep it & get it ready to drop in & minimize your downtime. What eng is this.

If you ever find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

I didn't build it so I cannot tell you exactly
what compression ration is, but compression test
is about 185 psi. Cam is eddy Performer RPM, intake
is eddy air gap RPM, and bouncing back and forth
between 3310 750 and a 670 street avenger.
A833 trans. The current disty doesnt seem to bring
in all advance until well above 4K

proably has the orig light spring & the heavyone with the long loop on one end. Definitely open it up,clean everything & change them/shorten the slots

As RR said it sounds like you need to shorten the slots a bit. Also try just removing the heavy spring and running with just the remaining one lite spring. That should give you full advance around 2200 or so. Dave

I'm pretty good with a welder so I can give it a
shot to shorten them up I guess.

That would explain why it runs soooo good with about
18 advance and pretty much all the time. Only time
I noticed the knock was under really heavy load, which was very seldom, or all out pedal on the floor. I was shocked to see it still advancing at way above 4K. I have a timing tape on the balancer
too for what it's worth.

Isn't all in by 2200 kind of low? I am guessing
a max of about 38 should keep me safe?

(1) no (2) small block? 35 total wo the vac adv connected is a good baseline. ANY ping you can hear back it off more until you can put in a heavier spring/and or less initial.

Robert,

I dropped initial back down to 10 before, sure
hurts performance, but not the motor for now. The
car actually runs like 10-15 degrees hotter too!

Thanks for your help.
