Every maybe 2-3 miles on the hiway my 3.9 dakota will sputter, or surge, like a misfire, just once, but very noticable. Just started doing this a week or two ago, drove 25 miles earlier and it didnt do it once, made the 5 minute drive to work and I felt it happen twice.

Just just a new cap and rotor on few months ago.
Any ideas? Plugs and wires?

Thanks.

Sounds similar to my 89 Dakota 3.9. Turned out to be the coolant temp sensor.

Is there any quick way to check a CTS? Is it OK to just unplug it temporarily to see if the problem goes away, or will it upset the computer?

Unpluging it will increase idle speed. Now you really confused the ECU. I suppose it goes into limp mode. Did it throw a CEL? If you can, scan for codes.

I'd check the rotor, just to make sure, how's the plugs/wires?

CEL hasnt come on. Plugs and wires look fine, but Ive been planning on changing them anyway...

Have you noticed anything else like:
- gauge cluster not working
- interior electrical not working (radio)

Has this happened in wet/damp/humid weather?

There is a common problem with a splice in the wiring harness under the washer fluid bottle on the 92-95 Daks. It happened on my 94 and appeared randomly as you mentioned. Eventually it died in the driveway. If you want more details, look here:

Hmm... come to think of it, I have noticed the tachometer dies and comes back on occasionally and randomly, I wonder if they could possibly be connected? So, the splice is 2 red and white wires into 1 red and white wire? And the connection in in the main harness under the washer fluid bottle? I'm going to check this out tomorrow, for peace of mind if anything. THANKS!

That was 8 years ago...

The spice was in the center of the harness and was located about 8-10" from the power dist center (underhood fuse box) going towards the cab. Many times corrosive washer fluid spills over and bleeds down into the harness, causing the copper wire to corrode and break. There are no check engine lights but with the break I had it threw a code showing the battery was disconnected. Be ready to spend some time...

When it did happen and does not start some people have successfully restarted the truck by wiggling this chunk of harness. If this is your problem, you are about the 5th person I have helped on the 'net and in person. I know of 5 Daks that came into Dad's shop with this problem and a classmate from school.

And when you fix the corroded connection, solder the splice and use heat shrink.I was told years ago by a Chrysler Svc rep that the vapors from the battery caused the problem. As for wiper fluid, probably a combination of both.

Wiring splice by washer jug is a common problem but usually causes no start problem. 92 were known for the brass bushing in block for oil pump drive to wear out causing problems that range from missing, bucking, surging only at a certain rpm. I think it was somewhere in the 1500-2500 rpm range. What happens is when bushing wears out dist timing does not stay accurate.

You were right on this one. Pulled the intermediate shaft out and the teeth on the gear were shiny and about half gone. The bushing needs to be replaced, but I put in a good intermediate shaft for now, and it hasn't missed a beat. Now to make a decision on that stupid bushing. Good time for a 5.2 swap eh?
