So My fresh 727 and freshly tightened converter would go forward in all gears including 1, 2, 3 neutral and reverse. This is in my race car. This is a new motor combo, and motor has no more than 20 minutes of run time in the car, most of it idling. Did drive it around the driveway for 2-3 minutes tops.
Tore the transmission apart today. Heavy contamination. All the black contamination in the pictures picked up by a magnet. All components inside the transmission looked okay. Lots of contamination in the valve body that could have locked up a shuttle valve.
My transmission guy says the torque converter failed. Does this make sense? Like I said - it never even hit the track.......

Its heading back to the converter guy but he is out of pocket this week so I can't talk to hm yet. Its more than a flush of the converter I believe. There looks to be a piece of the converter sprag on the filter.

My biggest issue is I don't have a smoking gun why it went forward in neutral and reverse, only suspicions - and it wasn't the converter doing that ..........

First question, why was the trans rebuilt the first time? Second, being a race trans, I assume it’s a manual shift valve body. If so, there is nothing in the valve body that will keep the rear clutch on in all gears. Unless the manual valve is stuck in the forward position. As for the converter - a dirty converter or one that failed usually puts trash through the pump.

Yes - it is a manual valve body. The new motor makes 1060 hp and the car is heavy. In order to give the tranny the best chance of living, the last piece of the tranny that was stock was the output shaft. The tranny was built originally by A&A with the best they had and now we added the aftermarket output shaft. So that is why the transmission was gone through. I suspect I may need to eventually do something different, but for now I hope the tranny lives for a while in the car. The converter was tightened up by my converter guy because of the added hp, hence it was fresh. Someone missed something.......

All components inside the transmission looked okay. Did you actually disassemble the rear clutch? When the piston pops out of its bore and jams the clutch, a cursory look might not see it.

The tranny was built originally by A&A with the best they had and now we added the aftermarket output shaft. So that is why the transmission was gone through. If you have the steel body front planetary, look carefully at the splines on the planetary and the new output shaft. See if that is the source of the metal. That much metal should be easy to see damage if it is the splines. Yes the rear clutch needs to be disassembled and inspected. But I doubt it was the source of all the metal.

We did fully disassemble it. We found nothing that looked incorrect to us other than all the contamination. Jim - it is a steel planetary and we inspected it all. No evidence that the material came from within the transmission. Need to get the converter opened up ASAP.

There is an issue in the trans. Doug
