Hi,
I have a 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 with the Hemi. It has 33K miles and is not driven often. A couple months ago the CEL came on and then went off some time later. The other day it came on again, but has stayed on. The code is P3401. When looking this up showed the engine running poorly, it made me wonder as mine actually runs better. My MPG has gotten better since the light has been on, MDS has not been coming on with the CEL.
Any ideas what could be going on or what to check? Hate to have to get the manifold pulled to check the solenoids when it could be n easier fix.

Have erased the code and see what it does. Maybe it won't come back on. You could also disconnect the battery for a bit and lst the system reboot. Just a couple ideas. You never know.

Cleared the code and went for a ride. The Fuel Saver light came on, then went off and the CEL came back on. I believe it's the solenoid that could be bad which won't let the engine go into MDS mode. The problem is the solenoid is located under the manifold. I wish there was an easy way to at least verify that it is the solenoid, or a way to get [censored] off the MDS.

First, dont let something as simple as an intake manifold deter you from making a repair. Its a 10 minute job to remove. But before you replace anything, pay a pro with up to date diagnostic equipment to pinpoint the issue. You'll be miles ahead then just guessing. Second, just a warning- if you're set on removing and inspecting an mds solenoid, buy a new one. You will break it removing it. The job, if it is in fact an mds solenoid, is super simple. Look online for a mopar overstock/wholesaler to purchase the solenoid from. Its a savings of near $100 a piece. Buy the Mopar brand.

Does the 2009 have lifetime power train warranty from Mopar? If so, it may be a free fix at the dealer. Not sure when they quit offering the lifetime on power train.

I do have the lifetime power train warranty, not sure if it applies.
I am looking at possible causes and eliminating them as I can.
Oil level was good
Oil pressure is good
Changed the oil today just to see if that helps
Then most likely to the dealer.

I have an appointment at a dealer tomorrow. They want $180 to diagnose it, and can't verify if it is covered under the warranty.

If it's covered under warranty (either max care or factory powertrain), the diagnostic fee should be waived.

Thanks to all, it ended up being the solenoid for cylinder 1 that was bad. It was all covered under warranty, including the diagnostic fee.

I have lifetime max care on 2 of my vehicles. Co worker says I'm crazy for taking the vehicle to the dealer for brakes since other shops can do it cheaper. While that is true, they try to make sure any issues that the warranty will cover are covered.Corrosion issues are not covered, and in Michigan that is an issue. They worked around it a few times. Pay a little more for maintenance, but when it comes to expensive repairs, the max care pays off.

Well, while that CEL fix was free, my recall costed me over $1,000 on the same visit. The recall was for the gas tank strap because of it being weakened by rust and corrosion. When they droped the tank, the strap and the bracket it was supposed to hook up to were rusted. They had to weld in a new bracket, replace the brake line that was also corroded in that area. I guess I should be happy the brake line was taken care of, but all that happened because of the corrosion above the gas tank, which is why they initiated the recall.

Seems to me if the strap was under the recall then so should the damaged area where the strap attaches? Make no sense to give you a new strap but no place to attach it to due to rust. I would look into it a little further.
