I converted my old classic dominator from 15-in to 16-in. After blowing 22 Goodyear Marathon radials, I had had enough. I just bought some six lug, 16 in rims and then some good 16 in load range e tires. Everything worked out fine until I put a 5,500 lb car in the trailer. It caused enough deflection that the top of the tires cambered in and rubbed on the wheel wells. So I took a hammer and finessed the wheel wells where the rub marks were. Keeping that in mind, I would get the narrowest 16 in tires you can. Something like a 215/85R16. By the way there's nothing wrong with putting a truck tire on the trailer.

as has been noted, truck tires work good, but be forewarned.
some states DOT's frown heavily on doing this.
lots of unknown DOT rules from state to state, so make sure you bone up on them before you travel.
that can save you from having a very bad day !

235/85/16 on our trailer. Stepping up to the “G” rated Greenball Towmasters the best tire I’ve ever had here in tire he77! I’m actually on my 4th season on these, but I have cheated and stored them inside from May until Sept. prior to these I’d never gotten through the 3rd season on any E rated tire we ran. I’d guess we have probably 15k miles on them with two SoDak trips, and numerous Phoenix and Famoso treks. Ours is a leaf spring trailer and I think they put a longer hanger on the frame to accommodate. 6 lug 5k axle.

Wes…. Maybe you could get one of many RV places down there to accept a cash deposit to borrow a tire wheel assy and mock things up. I’d bring one of mine down that way but they’re pretty big.

If you want a GOOD trailer tire, track down a set of Goodyear ENDURANCE tires. The ONLY USA made 15" trailer tire out there. I run them on all of my trailers, 205/75-15, 225/75-15 and 235/80-16, and have never blown one out. Every chinese tire I've run has eventually failed by either blowing out or separating at the edge where the sidewall meets the tread. There are quite hard to find, but Amazon found me 4 last month for my car trailer. I was running Goodyer Longtrail truck tires (225/75-15) until I aged them out at 10+ years and some growing sidewall cracks. I threw some chinese ones on since they were all I could get on short notice, but I had to replace them after a year for sidewall separations.

I too run Goodyear Endurance tires on my trailer and keep them covers at all times unless I'm pulling it.

The only reasons I'd with a 16 over a 15 would be if the load rating was greater (and I needed it), or the tires were tall enough to reduce bearing speed. My trailer has 15's on it and the Goodyears on it now are somewhat shorter than the previous bias tires that were on it, but I've never had any issues with heat in the tires or hubs.

Dealt with my last tire failure. Going to a LT truck tire. Really don’t care what the states think.

As long as the rating is equal or better than OE knock yourself out! My limited research prior to going to a G rated tire (max load single 4400lb @ 110psi) was that people were seeing about the same rate of tire failure with the LT as the ST. My G rated tires have L rating up to 75mph speed.

I have Goodyear Endurance tires on all three of my trailers. One set has been on since 2016 and still looking good and thats say a LOT in the desert. They just went on a 2500 mile round trip to Texas and back with no issues. They are 15" tires as well.
