I'm building a 71 Roadrunner with a Gen III Hemi and I am deciding upon transmission. I have looked at the 4L60E conversions and prefer to keep a 727 but want an overdrive. Curious for input from anyone using a gear vendors overdrive setup. If you have pics of your finished install, that would be great.

How about a 46rh or 46re to use instead of the 727 w/gv?

Is the OD ratio on a Gear Vendors even worth it? If you don't mind the fabrication work to the tunnel 518 is the way to go. Hell of a lot cheaper too.

What are you expecting for HP and torque ?

Agree. The $3300+ cost would be better off with an upgraded factory transmission that already has overdrive built in. There are now lots of options if someone is willing to do the work.

I am currently in the middle of a gv od unit on a 69 charger 4 speed car. I slotted the crossmember .100 like they said and it still would not fit. I had to clearance the tunnel slightly AND install smaller bolts (3/8”) instead of the 7/16 that are factory in 69 cars. It’s still very close. We may have to do some more clearancing. I had a friend that dropped his crossmember about 1/2” total plus beat the tunnel in on his 70 chevelle . They say don’t drop it that much but his works fine.

I am running a 5.7 hemi with 727 and gear vendor in an E body. Everything fits great. While the overdrive is not as much as a factory overdrive I still really like it. I cruise at about 2800 rpm at 78 mph on the highway in overdrive. Way better than the 3600 rpm I use to turn. I ended up getting the gear vendor for free, just traded labor.

That may be an option. I’m trying to avoid cutting the tunnel too much and not sure what electronics would be needed.

If you have a choice, use a short 727, truck or motorhome. It puts the overall length slightly longer than stock so it doesn't make driveline angles as much of an issue. They advertise a Shorty version but I'm not sure if it uses the above mentioned trans or if it uses a 4x4 case. If it uses a 4x4 case it would be really short and probably would not work with a factory rear mount system.

The GV does have the advantage of being able to split gears so you wind up with a close ratio 6 speed auto, something a 5.7 could take advantage of.
