It was suggested that i mount my radiator over flow and transmission cooler at the rear behind the tires
Does anyone have pics of their setup?

This is street / strip setup

I had a trans cooler mounted under the trunk in my Duster. The cooler had a built in fan with a thermostat so it kicked on at a set temp. Worked great.

How much does each one weigh?
I wouldn't worry or even think about doing that on a street and strip car, use your skills for better results twocents

I like to mount the trans cooler under the car and close to the transmission to keep the lines short. I've even mounted them on the crossmember so they come down with the trans when removing.

Mounting in the back somewhere works too. Up under the floor in the rear seat area. Never gone all the way to the trunk. Any place is preferable to all the stuff and lines up on the radiator.

Not sure why it's fashionable to put the overflow in the trunk. Not that much weight and you have a 18' long hose to run and secure.

My S/P car has the tranny cooler mounted under the passenger side of the floor less than 24 inches for each hose to the Powerglide, it is space about one inch away from the floor for air flow through it, I have never seen the fluid temps above 220 F up

The bottom side of the trunk in the center was the only place with any room on my Duster. The full length 3 inch exhaust system took up a lot of room under the car so center of the trunk was it. The car had a fuel cell in the trunk.
I don't see any reason for the overflow bottle to go in the rear. I used a production style coolant recovery bottle right next to the radiator. If you use an OEM coolant recovery then you can see the coolant level and there is no need for it to ever overflow. It should just cycle back and forth between the cold level and the hot level.

I don't have the trans cooler fitted at the rear but the coolant overflow can is. I re-located it there after a buddy had a close call with the wall when his head gasket blew. The gasket failed just enough to pressurise the water system and dump the contents out through his catch can. At the time it was fitted at the front. Needless to say a lot have followed suit. twocents

Here's mine. Mounted under the drivers seat inside the frame rail in case failure the fluid isn't in the tire path. No fan fluid has never seen 200 degrees.

for those that run a fan on their cooler, is it a pusher or puller style unit ?
or doesn't it make a difference ?

I always mount my trans coolers in the back. Working on the truck now and it is just behind the rear end between the framerails.

Just how I've done it numerous times.

Any fan will work much better as a puller.

THAT IS EXACTLY why I was asking. This happened to a friend and the fluid under the tires put the car int the wall.

I would expect the Trans cooler to also be behind the tire!

Would that not be the safest in case of issues?

Have to agree it would be the best place for it. It would also need a fan since air flow is limited there. Our trans cooler is in the usual place in front of the radiator for best air flow. It's connected with AN fitting's and hose to minimize the risk and I'm confidant it will be OK. But ultimately, the rear (with a fan) will be the ideal place.

Dominic, Thumperdart, excellent carb builder now, had a small tranny cooler (4000 to 8000 lb. rated maybe) mounted in front of his radiator at first before installing a tranny temp gauge. His tranny temps never got above 140 F even in the summer in the middle of the Mojave Desert in July and August beating on it in the afternoons shock
He lowered and moved it to behind the front bumper sideways and it would run from 160 to 220F depending on any back to back runs he would make foot stalling it work scope wrench
My current S/P car has single small 12x12 inch plate type cooler mounted sideways under the passenger side floor board with about one inch spacing between it and the floorboard, no fan or scoop on it for air flow, the highest tranny temps I've seen is under 220 F in the middle of summer here in central Oregon at Madras 1/8 mile track, the car leaves around 5800 RPM at WOT on the trans brake for a little over one second: up: I make sure to warm the fluids up before racing it is, normally around 130 F on the tranny temps in the staging lanes and around 160 F on the oil temps, both are hard to get temps into them running E85 fuel. Coolent temps around 140 F to 220 F depending on the weather and if I frget to turn on the fans and water pump before racing it realcrazy whiney whistling
I think most hot rodders and racer use over kill on the tranny coolers, way better to have them run 230F than 130 F twocents

It depends where you monitor the temp. If you set your gauge to read the temp in the O/P line to the trans cooler I see 240 - 260 degrees during a pass. The pan is around 170. The line temp plummets when you lift off the gas. Pretty scary at first but after 10+ years with no problems you get confidant it must be normal grin

Yeah I have done that before, a little panic inducing at first!

8" 4500 converter in front of the rad, no fan. The highest temp I have seen is like 180-190 and that was after hours of crawling in rush hour traffic.
