I used to have a section of pegboard on the wall behind my workbench. It was roughly 3'X6'. I used the typical pegboard wood/fiberboard (not sure what you call it). I made a 'frame' out of 1X3's kinda in the shape of a capital 'E' laying face down leaving the bottom 'open' so that dirt and crap wouldn't collect between the pegboard and wall (I hope that made sense)to mount the peg board on to hold it away from the wall so the hooks could be installed. I never hung anything real heavy, just the typical wrenches, screw drivers, etc, etc. Never had any issues.
Too bad you're not closer, while my pegboard is gone, I still have a box of hooks that I'd be willing to donate.

If you had a store near you that went belly up or remodeled, the gondola style pegboard is the way to go. I haven't mounted it yet but I got quite a bit when the local NAPA store remodeled. Advantage of this stuff is that is has a metal frame which should make mounting easier. Gondola Pegboard

I have always used the wood peg board and it works well! If you want it to have a different look paint it to match the design of your garage cabinets or tool boxes.

Pegboard should never have outlines of tools painted on the surface. I have a small amount above a small bench in the garage. In the shop, never. In the garage I have things like scissors, padlocks, keys, a crescent wrench, and a few other things. To mount I did not use the spacers, rather I ripped some 1/2" plywood and ran it across the top and bottom and added a few verticals, That all was glued and tacked with brads Back primed and front finished with high gloss spray with primer. I plan to take it out as it still collects dust and what not. Plan to put up hard faced plywood and simply (slant)drill and insert 1/8" rod cut to whatever length Being able to install a few small shelves and a key/lock cabinet prompted this new plan.

i have a small section of peg board in the garage that was there when we moved in. i just have a small selection of little used tools and items on it. if i were to remodel the garage [will never happen at this stage of my game. ] i would leave the peg board out.

I have 2 sections of the particle board peg boards in my garage. They were there when I moved in and have been there over 20 years. They have seen the full load of abuse for 20+ years. There have been a couple places where a few of the 6" long pegs were a bit overloaded and did pull through (couldn't hold the 50' torch hose coiled over it more then a couple of years, or 6 of the 11" vice grips on one peg more then 10 years). My peg boards are attached to the wall with 6 long screws into the studs with a 3/4" nut spacing the board away from the wall, the boards are 4' x 4', and there was no other support, but I've relocated those support locations from the original holes. The one panel gets more heavy stuff the the other one does because of its location. The garage is pretty dry, and is heated, but is does see humidity when its humid outside. There is some droop in the boards themselves, and over the years I've moved the mounting screws to different locations. Those boards are still loaded pretty full to this day.
The pic was taken in 2021, but it still looks about the same today. The torch hose still hangs off the pegboard (different holes), but I'm a lot more gentle removing and hanging up back up.
