Hi,

What is the difference in the 1970 383 4bbl 330hp non- R/T vs the 383 4bbl 335hp R/T engines? Or is there no difference?

I believe they are both "N" codes? Both HP blocks? In E-bodies.

From previous discussions I think it's just the camshaft? But 5HP seems too little for the difference in cam specs?

There's a similar situation among C bodies with 440's, there's the standard 350HP, the 360HP police package and the 375HP version. The 360HP would be similar to the the 383 330HP? So the small cam costs the 383 5HP vs the 440 at 15 HP? shruggy

Carbs are different too, Carter on 330 hp and Holley on 335 hp I'm pretty sure.
And the 335 hp engines are painted hemi orange instead of blue, I'm sure that adds a hp or two. wink

I know "L" is the 2bbl. I don't think there was an "M".

My convertible is a JH27N0B. It's an automatic with a blue engine. Interestingly, a JH23 or JH27 N0B car with manual got an orange painted engine, Does that mean they got the 335 hp engine?

I think you're seeing a year model difference there? In '68 and '69 pretty danged sure either version had the AVS. I_think_they switched to Holley in 1970 for the 383's? Referencing the 440's again, the lo po's got the Holley, hi po's the AVS, not sure about the police package but suspect strongly it was the AVS?

Pretty sure both N coded engines. Non a/c cars were 335hp with holley and orange paint, a/c equipped cars were 330hp with Carter AVS and blue paint

I know, then I came along and muddied the waters with the '68 and '69's I regard as a basis since they were common when I started as a mechanic. I remember being surprised to see a Holley 4bbl on a 1970 383 e body back in the day. Another list...all the '69 4 bbl 383's were AVS, in 1970, almost all were Holley's. I think it was a cost issue, the Holley's were cheaper and had more problems. Why they kept the AVS on the hi po 440's? shruggy

The # of variations is probably why the engine & trans codes were written on the valve covers.
Probably some sequence # as well on a tag, as they wouldn't be checking VIN stampings before installation.
As for the HP rating, those were more about marketing than real output.
Of all the 383s I've had, mostly in Road Runners, most of them ran fairly equally whether they had AC or not.
Some were stronger than others, and a couple were pretty "casual".
Mileage (17K - 130K) didn't seem to play a big part in their relative strength, oddly.

Not sure if this was mentioned, but I remember A-body big blocks had a more restricted driver's side exhaust manifold.

E bodies too???

My new plane jane 1970 Challenger, 4 speed bucket seats no console, had orange engine and Holly carb with bog city distributor.
Plus my sisters car 1970 Coronet, orange engine and Holly carb auto on the column.

The cams are the major difference. The 383 2bbl and 383 4 bbl have the same cam/valve springs that is used in the 350HP 440, the 335hp 383 has the same cam/valve springs used in the 375 hp 440. Everything else is window dressing.

In 1969 only the 330HP 383 used in the A body is the same 335hp engine used in the Road Runner in Superbee, though it has a dual point distributor along with the restrictive left manifold. Interestingly I believe the 440 in the A body is rated at 375hp despite the restrictive left manifold ????

If I remember right I don’t think the little cam 383 made 330 hp more like 275 advertised a real pig

67 383 lo po in a 69 RR vert - no power even though it had the hi po manifolds. Was easy on gas.

69 383 numbers engine in 69 rr, sounded rowdy, couldn’t tell much as it was worn out when in car. Changed engines.

69 super bee with worn but serviceable 383 numbers engine. Nice combo, plenty of power though all stock.

70 383 hp put in 69 rr. Was mean with intake and headers with avs. Was wicked feeling with 750 Holley.

Just paint your engine Hemi orange. Nobody wants to see a correct blue or turquoise no matter how correct it is.

Looking at the 70-71 Chrysler parts book there is no difference in cams based on HP vs Non-HP although they do list a different cam for raised ring. What is that?
