Can aluminum heads be welded? There is about a 1/8" deep by 1/4" wide channel between the two inner combustion chambers

Some can…. Some can’t. If you have a W5, I’ll just say…. Good luck!
That said one of my W8 heads had a combustion chamber repair done prior to me owning them. Looked like new.

Take it to a good aircraft repair shop(tig welds aluminum) and see if they will work on it for you scope
or a heavy duty diesel repair shop also scope

All can be welded. Not all should be fixed.

Pretty common problem(probably the most common aluminum head welding repair).

Somebody fairly close to you should be able to take care of it.

. Thanks for the info. I don’t have any connections around here for aluminum welding. I’ll have to look into it tomorrow. Plus, I’m sure the head will need machine work after the welding. Thanks again.

I’m sure Tom Hemphill could fix you up but I’m not sure how long it would take. An old timer down by pittsburgh mills mall could probably do it in a day or two. Let me know if you need his number. He can’t machine it but he could weld it. This guy has some interesting history and stories to tell

. If you could, send me any contact info you have. PM me. I’d like to find a one stop shopping place, I’ll take anything at this point. This will be my first rodeo.

I sent you a message with a couple of numbers. My son works for this guy at a chassis shop in Even City. The owner could probably weld it but not machine it.

Mike Lane at FastLane Machine in Orem Utah fixed a W9 of mine that had chamber messed up.

Looking at it now I can't tell which one it was.

He used to work for Chapman.

I second this, had on 2 occasions now a lifting the head issue on my f2 w8 stuff. Sent them here to have the 3/4in deep fire torch issue fixed. MINT work.

Hey Larry
There is a one stop shop in Akron where I get some of my stuff machined. They repair big diesel heads and complete the valve job when finished with the repairs.
Center Automotive in Akron Ohio talk to Randy he is the man in charge.

My welder says pre-heating is the key to a successful aluminum head repair weld.

I just dropped off the head for welding and machine work. Thanks to everyone for your input. Hopefully I'll have it back by the end of the week.

Tom Hemphill's . Thanks for the connection. He is pretty far from my house, but it is a one stop deal.

I would add grind it with a carbide till it has no contamination in the damaged area then weld it.
